Parental Influence & Underage Drinking Prevention According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, "One and five teens binge drink.

Only 1 in 100 parents believe his or her teen binge drinks." It's no secret that youth are at risk for peer pressure & underage drinking, the GOOD news is that parents are the NUMBER 1 influence in their teens' life. With this understanding, In 2009, The Latino Youth Council created a campaign called Parents—A Powerful Tool to Prevent Underage Drinking (which are the pictures you see on this page)

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, "One and five teens binge drink. Only 1 in 100 parents believe his or her teen binge drinks."

It's no secret that youth are at risk for peer pressure & underage drinking, the GOOD news is that parents are the NUMBER 1 influence in their teens' life. With this understanding, In 2009, The Latino Youth Council created a campaign called Parents—A Powerful Tool to Prevent Underage Drinking (which are the pictures you see on this page). The LYC knew that if a teen believes his/her parents’ perception of alcohol use as being harmful, that this would be large contributing factor in their decision not to use alcohol. And what easier way to get that message across than, advertising in stores!

The cutouts that you see on this page, contain faces of LYC members with their messages they created- all for the purpose of preventing underage drinking. This campaign was then posted in several businesses around City Heights.

To test the effectiveness of, "Parents are a Powerful Tool to Prevent Underage Drinking" a survey was employed to get the public's perception. Eighty-seven percent of those surveyed believe retailers can play a role in bringing the message to parents to prevent underage drinking.

Due to the great success The Latino Youth Council had in City Heights, in 2010 Serra High School's student-relations committee, ELEVATED adopted this campaign which is now displayed at their school and in several community businesses.

When is the last time you talked to your teen about underage drinking?
TEENS WILL LISTEN TO WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY!

If you’re a business owner and would like to support this initiative (at no cost to you), please contact Claudia Baltazar at [email protected] or Stacy Woods at [email protected] and we can supply your business with the cutouts you see on this page
