Tick Mattresses with Gareth Rees

This hands-on three-day upholstery course is ideal for beginners and enthusiasts wanting to learn the traditional craft of making wool and hair-filled tick mattresses. Now often known as "French mattresses," these were once common across Europe with various natural fillings before sprung mattresses became popular. Participants will gain practical skills in stuffing, tufting, and stitching, using high-quality materials to create a durable and comfortable mattress of an approximate size of 30” x 20”. Prepared upon a stretcher frame in the traditional manner, the course gives instruction on how to make much larger full-size mattresses utilising the skills learned in class.

Traditional Stitched Bolster

This three-day course, led by Gareth Rees, focuses on the making of a hand-stitched traditional bolster cushion, using traditional upholstery techniques. Participants will create a bolster filled with a traditional combination of hair and fibre, developing an understanding of shaping, density and control through hand stitching. The piece will be finished with an appropriate damask and matching passementerie.

French tufted footstool with Armand Verdier

Step into the timeless craft of French upholstery and learn to create your own tufted tabouret carré in this immersive 6-day intensive course. Guided by expert instruction, you will master essential techniques – from webbing and lashing down to stuffing and stitching and creating a deep tufted finish– while discovering the secrets that bring precision and elegance to every project.

Throughout the course, you will work hands-on to transform raw materials into a beautifully upholstered stool, gaining not just technical skills but also a deep appreciation for the art of traditional craftsmanship. Whether you are a beginner or looking to refine your skills, this experience is designed to inspire and equip you for future projects.
