Every month here at Little Fish, we have a Comic Savvy, a community event where folks come together, talks comics and break bread. Not all Savvy’s are built the same.

This past weekend we had Zach Norris in, signing his new zine CREAM (Comics Rule Everything Around Me) and discussing hip-hop, music, and intersections with comics.

It was an exceptional evening! We had parents and families in. We had industry folks in. We had professors in from SDSU. It was glorious! Zach, congrats on the book (first of many!), and San Diego, thanks for showing up! For comics, the arts and community!

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day from all of us here at Little Fish! Established to honor this incredible man’s life and legacy, we wanted to share a bit of history that brings together MLK and comics.
🎨
“The Montgomery Story” (officially “Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story”) is a sixteen page comic first published in 1957. It was published widely distributed among civil rights groups, churches, and schools. “Montgomery Story” was produced by the studio of Al Capp (Lil” Abner) at no charge; Capp was a huge admirer of King and his mission!
🎨
“The Montgomery Story” had a huge impact on a then-teenage John Lewis, and it would inspire him to become a civil rights activist himself. (You can read an amazing recounting of Lewis’s own journey in March, a three volume graphic novel by Lewis, and , and published by )
🎨
Martin Luther King, Jr.’s story is one of perseverance, grace and humanity. This comic is a testament to that, and worth checking out as we celebrate this amazing man!

Who’s an Old Friend you’ve gotten to know again, and who’s a New Acquaintance you’ve just made?
We’re loving Cornelius ( ; ) and we’re rediscovering some vintage X-Men from the ‘80s, by way of the awesome Epic Collections!
How about you all? What’re you reading to start off 2026?

Little Fish Comic Savvy was in full effect this weekend! What is a Comic Savvy, you may ask? It is a monthly event held here at Little Fish, where instructors, students, fans and community members all come together to share book recommendations, news, see old friends and eat fresh doughnuts! Next one is coming up in mid-December, come join us!
🎨
A particular highlight was the attendance of Mary Ellen and Jack Shu, who gifted Alonso with a signed copy of George Takei’s newest graphic novel, “It Rhymes With Takei”!
🎨
Thanks for coming everyone, we’ll see you in December!!

What an incredible night in San Diego! On Wednesday, hosted a signing with Frank Quitely, and it felt like every comic fan in San Diego came out for it. Heck, not just San Diego; we talked to people from Los Angeles and Tijuana that traveled to San Diego specifically for this!!
Some of you know, but many don’t, that is currently Artis In Residence (partnering with Academic in Residence Lawrence Grove) and he has been so giving and active in his time here in the local comic community.
Academics, fans, retailers, professionals. Everyone was there, everyone was in great spirits, and we feel so lucky to just be a part of it! Cheers, all!!
(If you missed this event, come to tomorrow, where Frank and Lawrence will be on panel taking about comics in its many forms! Info is in our Stories)

Tis' the season, San Diego! Little Fish Comic Book Studio Winter Camps are now open for general registration! They've been open for students and families for a couple weeks and they are filling up! Act now to reserve a spot for our award-winning programming!
🎨
Our "Kidz Comic Camps" are perfect for elementary-level students, focusing on drawing, creating comics and learning new art skills!
By immense popular demand, we’re bringing back our "Dungeons And Dragons and Comics" camps! For older students, this awesome camp will let attendees create their character (and miniature!), go on a campaign, and create a comic about the whole thing! (This one is limited to five attendees per camp!)
And we've added two spotlight Intensives! Our first will focus on "Comic Creators", and we'll have a comic creator on hand to tell us about their tricks and tips! The second will be an "Inking Intensive", and will highlight the many ways you can bring your pencil drawing to life with the vast array of inking tools! (Both of these are 11+ years old)

We love our community, and it is awesome to feel the love in return! (Who doesn’t love an honorary award and an Ugly Doll?!?)
🎨
We recently finished a round of workshops with High Tech High Chula Vista (with funding from One Book, One San Diego!), where they made two-page comic stories with Little Fish’s guidance!
🎨
As the saying goes… But wait, there’s more! HTMCV will be exhibiting their work next month, and we’ll be featuring a preview of the printed comic!! Stay tuned for info on the when’s and where’s!!
🎨
Comics, man, so awesome!!!

Sometime you gotta roll up your sleeves and WORK! We’ve got a lot of comics and graphic novels in our library and recently, after being unable to find a classic one for use, we tore up a big chunk of it to overhaul the organizational system used! Whew!
🎨
Active Little Fish students can checkout most books for up to three weeks, and our library has everything from Dogman to Watchmen, animals to zombies and everything in between!
🎨
The book we couldn’t find and that kicked this off? It’s a classic! Lynd Ward’s 1929 wordless novel and early precursor to comics and graphic novels “Gods’ Man”. You know we had to give it a reread… once we found it!
