’s story for ESPN about how Rob Hill and Ian Walsh of the helped Roki Sasaki re-tool his mechanics is a testament to the importance of building technique around what the body can do.
If you expect all of your pitchers to throw the same way, you better hope they all can move the same way

Thoracic extension tends to be a superpower of some of the best throwers in the world.
In our experience, if an athlete lacks thoracic extension, they may over-rely on shoulder external rotation for layback, increasing the potential for injury.
Our lunge with extension test help us evaluate how well an athlete extends from the hip and thoracic spine. If a thrower doesn’t pass the test, we consider it to be a significant red flag.

Why we rely on assessments. Improve mobility where it’s needed, when it’s needed.
More ROM isn’t always better, especially with the shoulder.

There are infinite ways to get it done. Build the mechanics around what their body can do.

Even if an athlete achieves a desired position, we still want to know how they are accomplishing it.
For example, a pitcher might have great layback in their delivery, but they could be compensating for poor mobility in the spine by asking more of their shoulder.
In our experience, the body part that does the most work is most likely to break down.
We want to screen to see if one body part is working harder to make up for another part that isn’t doing enough.
