Hello everyone!
The Department of Sociology is looking for suggestions from current and past students regarding sociology courses at UCSD. It is a very short 2 Question Questionaire, the link is at the end of this message. We would really appreciate this in order to best help the Department plan for classes students are most interested in. Please take two minutes to answer the two questions, thank you.

I am Nacho advisor, but I am your Peer Mentor! Come by the Sociology Department office and get some nachos between 2 and 4 today. You can just come get some nachos, or just come and ask questions about the Mentorship Program(Don't forget that applications are due this Sunday December 9, 2018), or both!!

Dear Daisy the Dolphin,
What is the difference between an upper division elective and a college requirement?
Response:
For the sociology major, upper division electives are courses considered upper division that are taken outside of specific course requirements such as theory (SOCI 100) or methods (SOCI 102-110).
If you are a general sociology major, you are required to take 10 sociology upper division electives, which means you have the freedom to choose any SOCI 110-199 courses to fulfill that. If you have a concentration/specialization, you are required to take 5upper-division courses that fall into your concentration and any 5 upper-division sociology courses (therefore they can be outside of your concentration).
College requirements may sometimes overlap with your major requirements. However, every college has different requirements and therefore, we advise you speak to your college about specific requirements and overlap with your major requirements.

Dear Daisy the Dolphin,
I was wondering if the Sociology Department has graduation stoles for sale?
Response:
Unfortunately, the Department of Sociology does not offer sociology stoles for sale. However, as a class, you all can feel free to come together to create and buy sociology stoles for graduation.
You can try websites like:
https://pridesash.com/
https://www.gradshop.com/custom-stoles

Dear Daisy the Dolphin,
I'm a transfer student trying to navigate class registration website and I noticed that SOCI 60 is offered on different days for example Mondays 5:00p-5:50p. Does this mean it is only 50 minutes class? If so how it is considered 4 unites class? Would you mind clarifying this since the community colleges system might be different in counting units than UCSD?
Response:
When enrolling for classes, some classes may have a discussion section. That is what you are referring to when you say that the class is taught on different days for 1 hour a week. By enrolling in the discussion, you will too be enrolled in the lecture, which for SOCI 60 is on Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 11am-11:50am. Therefore, added together, you spend about 4 hours a week in class (4 units).
Make sure that you are checking if both the time of the lecture and the discussion you want to enroll in, fit into your schedule.

Dear Daisy the Dolphin,
Can I use Soci 126 or Soci 117 to count for my major, my EDS minor, my AHI, and my DEI?
Response:
You are allowed to have up to two classes count towards both your major and your minor, so yes, SOCI 117 and SOCI 126 can both be used for that. Either will also fulfill your DEI requirement.
However, for the AHI requirement, you’d have to contact your college advising and ask them.

Dear Daisy the Dolphin,
Does MMW 14 count towards my lower division major requirement? My Degree Audit shows that it does, but I can't find mention of it anywhere on the sociology website?
Response:
Yes, MMW 14 does count towards your lower division major requirement because it counts as the lower division sociology course SOCI 20. Therefore, MMW 14 covers your lower division elective course required to complete the major.

Dear Daisy the Dolphin,
I am a transfer student. Do I have until August 27th to enroll in a class or can I still enroll after?
Response:
Everyone has an assignment enrollment time period, which you can access through WebReg by clicking on the "Appointment time" link. Your appointment time lists when it begins and ends, so you have until then to enroll in classes. Keep in mind that there are two appointment time periods, so when your second pass appointment time begins, you can enroll in more classes until the end of week 2 of fall quarter. On August 29th, WebReg will be open to all students.

Dear Daisy the Dolphin,
I heard sociology 60 is only offered two quarters per year. I can't take it this fall ... what other quarter will it be available?
Response:
As of now, SOCI 60 is expected to be taught again in the spring. However, keep in mind that this schedule is tentative and subject to change so stay updated with your website's annual schedule!

Dear Daisy the Dolphin,
I'm planning on taking my methods course this upcoming quarter and I was wondering if I could take that p/np or does it have to be letter grade?

Dear Daisy the Dolphin,
I'm an incoming transfer student and I was wondering if I could take an online sociology class at my community college and still have it transfer over to fulfill my major requirements
Response:
Community colleges offer different types of courses (online, in-person, and hybrid). For it to transfer over and fulfill your UCSD requirements, it is vital that the course is UC-transferable, which you can verify by checking with your community college and/or www.assist.org.

Dear Daisy the Dolphin,
If I already fulfilled my sociology major requirements but want to take another sociology class to fulfill the 180 units to graduate, can I take it p/np or does it still have to be taken letter grade because I'm a sociology major?
Response:
Once you have fulfilled all of the requirements for the sociology major, any sociology class taken after that will count as an elective course (to fulfill the 180 units) and can therefore be taken pass/no pass!
