Financial Aid Options for Foster Youth

Many current and former foster youth think going to college is not possible for them. Completing a college education is not only possible, but it can also change their lives! Every year, California community colleges open doors to new opportunities, good paying careers and a brighter future for foster youth.

If you are someone you know are a current or former foster youth, there are special grants, fee waivers and other financial resources available to help pay for college and expenses such as rent, food, transportation and even child care.

These grants for foster youth provide funds that don’t have to be paid back:
California College Promise Grant waives tuition for low-income students.
Cal Grant B Foster Youth Award allows eight years of grant eligibility or until you complete a bachelor’s degree.
Chafee Grant Program offers $5,000 a year toward career and technical training.

To qualify for these grants and other financial aid resources, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application (CADAA). U.S. citizens fill out the FAFSA, while undocumented students must submit the CADAA. The 2022-2023 applications are available now. Apply early to qualify for the maximum amount available to you. NextUp can guide you through the process.

If you are a current or former foster youth, get started on the path toward achieving your higher education and career goals with NextUp.
