As part of Shark Week, I’d like to shine a light on the travesty of shark finning. It’s estimated that 73 MILLION sharks PER YEAR are killed for their fins… for soup.

Sharks are usually caught, mutilated to removed fins, and thrown back into the water to drown and suffocate because they are unable to swim.

Sharks are apex predators and play a vital role in keeping our marine ecosystems balanced. We need to protect sharks for the sake of ocean sustainability.

We’ve experienced some of the hottest days on record this year. Imagine what it’s doing to our oceans. ☀️

Climate change is real and it is an emergency we must address. 🌊

Happy Shark Awareness Day! There are over 500 species of shark in the world, and they are *essential* to balancing our ecosystems.

Don’t fear them, revere them. 🦈

We all know it’s Shark Week, but I want to know what YOUR favorite shark is, and why!

I love Hammerheads! Great hammerheads are the largest of the nine hammer species. Their heads are equipped with electrical receptors that can sense potential prey, including those hiding in the sand. Great hammerheads primarily feed on prey at the seafloor, such as stingrays, cephalopods (octopus and squid), crustaceans and other sharks. Great hammerheads have been observed using the sides of their heads to pin down their preferred meal, stingrays, while feeding on the ray’s wings. They do not hunt prey larger than stingrays.

Pretty cool, huh? Name your favorite shark in the comments! 🦈♥️

Happy World Oceans Day! 🌊♥️

This year’s theme is “Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean”, so let’s do our part, together!

Volunteer, organize, advocate! 🐙

Why do we celebrate World Ocean Day? 🌊

“The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world's population on a project for the sustainable management of the world's oceans.” -the United Nations

Anatomical simplicity. No bones, gills, or brains. Jellies are basically swimming nervous systems. 🤩

I list things I’m grateful for everyday, and generally there’s at least one ocean related thing, because as a San Diegan it just makes sense.

This quiet little nook is a place I’m grateful for. It’s peaceful, serene, and offers solitude, and though I’m grateful, I’m selfish, and not going to tell you where it is. 🙃

What are some of your favorite ocean-related books? 🌊📚

I love reading! Mostly about specific animals, ocean sustainability, and really anything non-fiction about the seas 😍

If you have a favorite book, drop it in the comments! My To Be Read List is looooong, but I can always add another. 😉
