Jack and Nathan both had super fights at .the_city on 3/22.

This was Jack’s first super fight. His match was supposed to be in the Gi, but his opponent thought it was no gi and did not bring a gi. Jack accepted the no gi match and switched his game plan to accommodate the change. Jack controlled most of the match and won via Kimura. I was impressed with Jack’s ability to stay composed during a literally last second switch up.

Nathan went up two age groups and two weight classes to face his opponent. Nathan lost via armbar and never got to get anything going for himself. A missed opportunity early to establish a guard turned into an uphill battle that he would eventually lose. Nathan consistently takes matches above his age and weight just to get more experience, win or lose he is there to improve. I see far too many kids(likely the parent or coach) avoiding tough matches. Nathan will fight anyone, anywhere, anytime, any rules.

Great job Jack and Nathan!

Brave 3/1/26

We had 5 competitors at Brave. 4 of the 5 kids are new to competing and still learning the process.
I’m very proud of Antonio, Kaira, Ireri, Theo and Jack.

Antonio and Ireri fought hard in their matches, but came up short. Kaira had 5 tough matches, winning the first and then losing the rest. Every match was very close and Kaira easily could have won them all. Kaira has improved so much since she committed to competing. I know she’ll start winning and showing her skill very soon. Theo won every match, submitting all but one of his opponents. Theo has also greatly improved and I was so happy to watch him showcase his skills! Jack won every match and no one scored a point on him. Jack dominated all but one opponent. This match was his toughest of the day (3-0) and was against his friend, Owen (who cross-trains with us on Fridays.) Jack is a seasoned competitor and continues to improve and add more techniques to his game.

Jack got silver in the gi despite winning every match. Brave has a cap of 4 matches in their “round robin” format. Unfortunately for Jack and the kid who got first, they did not get to fight each other. Jack placed second because, although both kids won 4 matches, the other kid submitted more opponents than Jack. This is upsetting because Jack didn’t have the opportunity to fight for first place. Jack would later meet this kid in no gi, winning decisively.

Great job, kids!

Yvonne’s first competition in over a year and as a Mom.

Really proud of her efforts today and leading up to today. This was a great opportunity to shake off the rust and I know she will improve with each tournament moving forward.

Great job, Yvonne!

1/25/26 Grappling X San Diego.

I couldn’t be more proud of my kids today! Theo, Kaira, and Antonio all competed for the first time. Ava competed as a grey belt for the first time and had to be put in a bracket with 2 boys for no gi. Nathan competed in two divisions after already competing in two divisions on Saturday 1/24/26 at San Diego.

These kids( along with their teammates) have been putting in hard work without complaint in preparation for today. We didn’t get all of the victories we wanted but everyone tried their best and gave it their all. I am especially happy that they were able to keep their emotions in check for the most part and whenever it got too much, were able to reel it back in fairly quickly. At Aftermath BJJ, we strive to make kids physically and emotionally strong. I expect each and every kid to handle themselves with respect whether they win or lose.

Great job today, kids!

Congrats to Jomar on receiving his Blue Belt!

Jomar comes in whenever he can, which is not very often. Everytime he comes back to train it’s like he never left. He retains what he learns very well which is surprising for someone who just can’t be as consistent as he’d like to be. Jomar is a very tough roll and I’m very happy to promote him.

Congrats, Jomar!

December has been a busy month!

Monday 12/8 we hosted a Hot Chocolate movie night for the kids! They voted to watch Home Alone!

Monday 12/15 we had our Ugly Sweater gift exchange. The kids had a blast playing White Elephant and made up their own games to play( I never let them do this 😂)

Thank you to everyone who participated! We have had so much fun enjoying some non jiu jitsu activities with you all!

Welcome our newest Purple belt, DJ!

DJ is by far the most consistent student we have. DJ has improved so much since he began helping out with the kid’s classes and supporting the kids at competitions.

Congrats, Coach DJ!

Now you get to skip the warm ups that we already don’t do. 😂😂

Congrats Coach DJ!

Aftermath Grappling X:

On Saturday, August 16th, 9 kids competed in 15 divisions. 4 of the 9 kids were competing for the first or second time.

As a team, we placed First for the “Youth and Teens No Gi” and Third place overall!

To me, one of the the best reasons to compete is to improve your Jiu Jitsu. Our students competed with different goals in mind:

- To win
- To practice specific game plans and moves
- To gain experience and learn what it’s like to compete.

No matter their goals, each of them leveled up. I am extremely proud of my kids for all of the hard work they put in preparation for the tournament. They also all showed incredible heart and were humble in both victory and defeat.

Ahkin - 🥇(Gi) 🥇(no gi)
Ava - 🥇(Gi) 🥇 (no gi)
Caleb - DNP in gi or no gi.
Jack - 🥈(Gi) 🥇 (no gi)
Jackson - DNP(no gi)
Jamie - 🥉(gi)
Nathan - 🥇(gi) 🥉(no gi)
Terr Bear - 🥇(no gi)
Thomas - 🥇(Gi) 🥇(no gi)
