This video, “The Importance of Being Bilingual,” begins with this quote from Rita May Brown, “Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going.”
In my classes, I tell my students the importance of understanding that they are not only learning new words, sentences or verbs, they are also learning the way people that use that language view the world. This new language can open the door for you to step into a different way of relating, celebrating, mourning or expressing a culture.
I notice that the students who also want to know more about the people, the way they relate to each other and their culture, invest more time in the process and, in the end, have better results.

Te dice de donde viene la gente y hacia dónde van” En clase, le explico a mis alumnos la importancia de entender que no solo están aprendiendo palabras, oraciones o verbos, sino que también están aprendiendo una nueva manera de ver la vida. Este nuevo idioma abre la puerta para que ellos aprendan una nueva manera de relacionarse, celebrar, despedir a un ser querido o cualquier otra forma de expresión cultural. Me he dado cuenta que aquellos estudiantes que muestran interés en la gente, en cómo se relacionan unos con otros y su cultura invierten más tiempo en aprender y, al final, obtienen mejores resultados.

Many people look for a language class because they want to be able to fluently speak with native speakers. However, speaking the new language is the last of the four skills they need to master to communicate with others. For that reason I like to organize gatherings where my students can feel safe to speak the language they are learning and can help them boost their confidence.

La mayoría de las personas buscan clases de idiomas porque quieren poder hablar de manera fluida con personas que hablan otro idioma. Sin embargo, el poder hablar es la última de las cuatro habilidades que se necesitan para poder comunicarse con otros. Es por esa razón que me gusta organizar reuniones donde mis alumnos se sientan seguros de cometer errores al hablar el idioma que están aprendiendo y que a su vez les de confianza para seguir adelante en sus clases.

I became an English teacher in 1998 and years later I began teaching Spanish. Throughout those years I’ve heard many complaints from my students: “It’s too hard”, “it’s so confusing” “ I don’t speak because I don’t want to make mistakes” and to be honest I didn’t always have a good answer for those complaints. Today I understand better how the brain works and I can give better answers to my students. If you are trying to learn a new skill, and it’s turning out to be really hard, listen to this lecture and let me know if it becomes easier. You are never too old to learn a new skill.

A few weeks ago; while I was driving, I heard on the radio an ad promoting an app that would teach you how to speak Spanish fast and easy. I was amazed that the examples they used for the Spanish conversation were both wrong. A native Spanish speaker would never have a conversation like that.
There are a lot of programs offering fast and easy ways to learn a language using many different methods but I believe there is an element they are not taking into account…the student. People learn in different ways and have different needs and challenges, so the teaching technique should be tailored for those needs and challenges.
Learning a new language takes time and money but it can also be fun and rewarding. If you want to be able to speak correctly and communicate your thoughts and feelings properly, consider a teacher/tutor. You will have a person that will work with you, and for you.

Lo que me pareció más interesante fue que la conversación que usaron como ejemplo de la eficacia del app estaba incorrecta. Dos personas con verdadero conocimiento de español nunca hablarian asi.
Existen muchos programas que ofrecen técnicas para aprender español fácil y rápido pero no toman en cuenta al estudiante. Las personas aprenden de manera diferente y sus necesidades y objetivos también son diferentes por lo que la técnica de enseñanza debería ser diseñada para solventar esas necesidades y lograr esos objetivos.
Aprender un nuevo idioma toma tiempo y dinero pero puede ser un proceso divertido y gratificante. Si deseas aprender otro idioma y comunicar tus ideas y emociones correctamente te aconsejo buscar un profesor o tutor. Tendrás a alguien que trabaje contigo y para ti.

Teaching was not my career choice but in 1998 I stated working as an English instructor and I fell in love with it.
I believe that teaching should be all about the students, about understanding their needs and the way they learn and because I’m a creative person my classes are always entertaining, and challenging. I do everything I can so that they enjoy the experience and I’m constantly looking for fun and creative ways to help them learn in an easier and faster way.

I don’t play video games. I tried a few times but I was clumsy, to slow and felt my fingers were to big. So when I saw the title of this video it didn’t make sense to me, but after watching it I understood why she chose that title and wanted to share it. Learning a new language or any other skill can be done in an easy and fun way, or under a lot of pressure. You choose how you will undertake that task. I don’t think you should settle for a low level of English or any other language as long as you are able to communicate effectively but I agree with her statement that we should learn a new skill as a game and not as an art to be mastered.
Yo no juego video juegos. Trate varias veces pero era torpe, lenta y sentía que mis dedos eran muy grandes. Así que cuando vi el título de este video me pareció que no tenía sentido, pero luego de verlo entendí porque le había puesto ese título y decidí compartirlo. Se puede aprender un nuevo idioma o cualquier otra habilidad de manera fácil y divertida, o bajo mucha presión. Tú decides como quieres aprender. Yo no creo que debamos conformarnos con un bajo nivel de inglés o cualquier otro idioma solo porque puedes comunicarte con los demás pero estoy de acuerdo con ella en que debemos aprender un nuevo idioma como si fuese un juego y no un arte que debemos perfeccionar.

I was with a friend a few days ago talking about education. We both share the passion for teaching, so we spend an hour talking about the importance of being a good teacher. I told him that one of my priorities is to make sure the students trust me, so they accept the knowledge and other life tools I share with them. We agreed that the best feeling as a teacher is to see the face of a student when they have the experience of an “aha moment”. This article talks about those moments we cherish as teachers. Hace unos días hablaba con un amigo sobre educación. Ambos compartimos la pasión por la enseñanza, por lo que pasamos una hora hablando sobre la importancia de ser un buen profesor. Le dije que una de mis prioridades es asegurarme de que mis alumnos confíen en mí para que acepten el conocimiento y las enseñanzas que les doy. Los dos estamos de acuerdo en que la mejor experiencia como profesor es ver la cara de un estudiante cuando comprende algo que le resultaba incomprensible. I believe teaching is a creative practice. To pass on knowledge to others you need to be able to find the right activity, and ask the right question. Every new skill can be learned in a different way and when you use a technique that is innovative, fun, interesting and enjoyable, the new skill will be learned faster and will be remembered for a longer period of time.
I worked at an Elementary school for 6 years and I was fortunate to have the support of the staff and the principal to create and implement a variety of games, songs and activities that helped my young students learn English. Now with the internet you can have fun and learn online. This are two web pages that can help you.
Para mi, enseñar es un acto creativo. Pasar conocimiento a otras personas requiere del proceso correcto y de la pregunta correcta. Una nueva habilidad puede ser aprendida a través de diferentes métodos y cuando utilizas una técnica innovadora, divertida, interesante y agradable, la nueva habilidad es aprendida mas rápido y es recordada por un largo tiempo.

Though, I don’t have a definitive answer to these questions, I have an anecdote about the subject. Years ago I entered the office of my new English students and a coworker, who was sitting at his desk, listened to our English conversation and decided he wanted to be my student. Few months later, we began classes. He felt in love with his classes and one day, he tells me that the class is changing the way he thinks and that he is dealing with the tasks at work, and the situations at home in a total different way.

Yo no tengo una respuesta clara para estas preguntas pero si una anécdota sobre el tema. Hace años, al entrar a la oficina de unas alumnas que iban a comenzar su curso de inglés, un compañero de trabajo escucho nuestra conversación y decidió que quería estudiar conmigo. Luego de cumplir con los requerimientos necesarios, comenzamos las clases. Un día me dice; varios meses despues, que las clases están cambiando su manera de pensar y de resolver los problemas en el trabajo y en su casa.
