🎓 There’s a lot of work that happens behind the scenes of college counseling.

1️⃣ I spend many, (MANY!) hours researching and building resources to help students make the most of their high school years.
2️⃣ I visit college campuses, hear directly from admissions readers, attend webinars, collaborate with other counselors, read books, review news articles, and listen to podcasts to stay current on the ever-changing college landscape.
3️⃣ I research scholarships, honors programs, special academic opportunities, residential life nuances, and student life options, so I can make the college list more tailored to each student I work with.
4️⃣ And I’m not just a UC or Cal State expert. I know small private colleges and large public universities, in-state and out-of-state schools, liberal arts colleges and research universities… and everything in between.

🤝 And yes, there are times when I don’t have the answer to every question. But I always know who to turn to for help. Yoo-hoo happy IEC friends and IECA--Independent Educational Consultants Association members!

***That means each hour I spend with a student is productive and purposeful because of all the preparation that happens before we ever sit down together.

💡 This kind of institutional knowledge doesn’t happen overnight; it takes years of research, conversations, campus visits, professional development, and experience. And I’m here for it! I love learning so I can help my students navigate this process with more clarity, confidence, and intention.

✍️ Just when you think you’re done writing your college essays…another one appears.

Supplemental essays can feel endless—and then there are the **sneak-attack essays** you discover after you create an account in a college’s application portal. Surprise! Another 250 words.

📚 Remember: the longer your college list, the more essays you’re likely to write. Every school has its own prompts you’ll have to answer thoughtfully.

🎯 This is one reason creating a manageable and college list matters. Make sure you have the time and energy to put together strong applications for your final list of schools.

💪 Start early, pace yourself, keep track of those prompts, and be intentional about your list.

🎯 **Tighten Up Your College List**

A college list shouldn’t be a collection of schools you’ve heard of or feel like you “should” apply to. The strongest lists are **intentional, balanced, and built around fit.**

🔍 Take a closer look at each college: Does it offer the academic programs you want? Does the campus environment appeal to you? Is the cost realistic for your family? Can you see yourself being happy there?

⚖️ A balanced list should include a thoughtful mix of likely, target, and reach schools—not just a long list of highly selective colleges.

✍️ And here’s the bonus: A more intentional list means you can spend more time developing **stronger, more personalized applications** for the schools you genuinely want to attend.

More applications don’t necessarily mean more opportunities. Better choices can lead to better applications—and ultimately, more admission success.

📚 11th Grade Is Busy. Time to “Block It.”

Junior year brings a lot: challenging classes, extracurriculars, testing, college research, and eventually the college application process. One of the best habits students can develop now is time management through time blocking.

⏰ Time Blocking: Instead of keeping a giant to-do list, schedule specific blocks of time for homework, studying, activities, college prep, and downtime.

🧠 Be Realistic: Don’t fill every minute of your day. Build in breaks, meals, sleep, and time to recharge.

📅 Plan Ahead: Look at your week before it begins. If you know a big test or project is coming, schedule preparation time before the deadline sneaks up on you.

The goal isn’t to do more. It’s to use your time intentionally and avoid the last-minute scramble.

📚 College application portals are officially open. Create an account and start completing sections of your application.

📝 Tips for Success:
1️⃣ Start Strong: Begin by organizing your application materials, including your transcripts, test scores, letters of recommendation, and personal statements. Take your time to craft compelling essays that truly represent your unique voice and experiences.

2️⃣ Proofread Thoroughly: Before hitting that submit button, carefully proofread your application materials to ensure they are free from errors. Have a trusted adult or mentor review your essays and provide feedback.

3️⃣ Stay Organized : Keep track of deadlines, requirements, and any additional materials requested by each college. Stay on top of your application checklist to ensure you submit everything on time.

🍦 One of my favorite traditions is meeting with students after their first year of college to hear how they’re *really* doing. I recently caught up with Steven after his freshman year at university, and as always, yogurt + conversation = the best combo.

😊 It’s incredibly meaningful to see students reflect on how much they’ve grown academically, socially, and personally in just one year.

📚 Steven’s biggest piece of advice: learn time management early. College gives students a lot of freedom, and figuring out how to balance academics, social life, sleep, and responsibilities is a skill.

👥 He also encouraged students to make friends across different groups and communities instead of staying in one bubble. Some of his best experiences came from unexpected friendships.

🏃‍♂️ And finally, he emphasized the importance of movement and healthy habits. Whether it’s walking to class, going to the gym, or getting outside, staying active helped him stay motivated and feel more balanced.

✨ I love hearing these reflections from former students. It’s a reminder that college is about so much more than admissions decisions; it’s about growth.
