For Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, MYA would like to recognize Patsy Mink who co-authored and sponsored Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, a landmark law prohibiting sex-based discrimination in federally funded schools and programs. This legislation has significantly expanded opportunities for women in education and athletics. Honoring her legacy during AAPI Heritage Month, we remember Mink's resilience and trailblazing achievements as the first woman of color and first Asian American woman elected to the U.S. Congress.

May is Labor History Month, we at MYA want to take time to honor the struggles and victories of the labor movement. Workers have fought for fair wages, safe conditions, and equality from the Haymarket affair of 1886 to the rise of labor unions and the New Deal reforms. Today, we continue the fight for workers' rights, acknowledging the ongoing struggle for economic justice and the importance of solidarity in building a better future.

Photos from MY Academy's post 05/02/2024

It's truly vital to acknowledge the work of civil rights and workers' activists who tirelessly fought for fairness and equality, even amid adversity. By celebrating their efforts, we pay tribute to their bravery and unwavering dedication to fostering a more equitable society. Their actions serve as poignant reminders of the strides made in advancing social and economic justice, inspiring us to persevere in our pursuit of equality and to confront existing challenges. Their collective efforts demonstrate the transformative power of unity, as they challenged injustices and advocated for significant societal changes.

Day 3: What are Unions? Unions safeguard workers' rights and negotiate fair wages. They advocate for equitable treatment, push for workplace safety, and fight against income inequality. Unions support social justice causes and historically have been instrumental in driving positive societal changes.

Day 2: Workforce Readiness Week. It's crucial for teens to know their rights as young workers for several reasons. First, it empowers them to demand fair treatment and safe conditions, preventing exploitation and accidents. Second, it ensures they receive fair wages and are protected from discrimination. Third, it helps them maintain a healthy work-life balance and fosters a culture of legal compliance and professionalism. Overall, this knowledge equips teens with confidence, advocacy skills, and a sense of responsibility, setting them up for success in the workforce while safeguarding their well-being.

We’re thrilled to share that in collaboration with the California Department of Education, MYA will be recognizing Workforce Readiness Week from April 29 to May 3, 2024.During this dedicated time, we aim to emphasize the importance of workplace justice and offer students the opportunity to learn about the crucial history of the labor movement in our state. We want to honor the significant contributions of both women and men who have played key roles in shaping our state. Additionally, let’s celebrate the invaluable contributions of essential workers, who work tirelessly to provide food for our tables, care for our families, and maintain our state’s infrastructure.Together, let's commemorate the efforts of past and present workers while deepening our understanding of workforce readiness.
