October is Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Awareness Month✨

AAC is Access. AAC is Inclusion. AAC is a VOICE. Communication is essential and AAC makes it possible for all.🙌🏻

All voices spoken, signed, typed, or expressed in any chosen form deserve to be honored.⚡️

For some, speech isn’t the only voice.

We must learn to listen differently.✨🙌🏻

✨Every student deserves the dignity of high expectations.

✨Every learner deserves the chance to show what they can do.

We learn. We unlearn. We reframe. We adapt.✨

This isn’t just a quote… it’s the rhythm of my life as both a mother of a 6 year old autistic child and a special education advocate.

I’ve learned about neurodiversity, neurodivergence, regulation and how every child communicates in their own unique way in the past 4 years.

I’ve unlearned outdated assumptions about “normal” and the pressure to force children into systems that weren’t built with them in mind. I’ve reframed challenges as communication, behaviors as information, and timelines as individualized not standardized.

And I continue to adapt because advocacy is never one size fits all. It’s responsive. It’s relational. It’s rooted in understanding, not control.

This journey continues to teach me to listen more, assume less, and always center the child, not the label.🙌🏻

Today marks National Disability Independence Day, honoring the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990.

This civil rights milestone changed the landscape of opportunity, inclusion, and accessibility for millions.
Let’s continue working toward a world where independence isn’t granted it’s guaranteed. ♾️💛

Today, we honor and celebrate the incredible diversity, strength, and brilliance within the autism community.

As a non-attorney special education advocates, we are proud to stand alongside autistic students and their families amplifying voices, supporting inclusion, and fighting for every child’s right to a free and appropriate education.

Autism Pride Day isn’t just about awareness…it’s about acceptance, self-advocacy, and the recognition that neurodiversity is something to be valued and celebrated.

To the students I work with: Your perspective matters. Your needs matter. YOU matter.

Let’s continue to build a world where all learners are seen, supported, and empowered to thrive just as they are. ♾️

Why some autistic people LOVE the ocean and water?

Water feels calming, safe, and predictable. The gentle sounds, floating sensation, and pressure from water can help with sensory overload and anxiety.

It’s quiet, peaceful, and doesn’t demand small talk—just comfort. For some, it’s a special interest. For others, it just feels right.

Some autistic individuals are drawn to water for sensory or emotional reasons.

Others may not like water at all, especially if they have sensory sensitivities to temperature, noise, or texture.

We are at the end of this school year and summer is around the corner! Congratulations to all parents and children’s who attend to a brick school or homeschool and support in the best way their kids.✨🙌🏻

ESY is designed to prevent significant skill regression over the summer and ensure a smooth transition into the next school year. It’s not the same as summer school…is based on individual needs. 🍎🌳✏️

Children with a disability often benefit from continuity of services to maintain progress and reduce the impact of long school breaks. ESY helps support consistency, structure, and individualized learning during the summer.

For more information or to discuss your child’s eligibility, send us a message! Let’s work together to support every learner, every day even in summer! 🌞

Sensory toys aren’t just toys, they’re essential tools. 💡✨

These tools support focus, emotional balance, and comfort. Things many of us take for granted in a learning environment.

At Words and Voice, we advocate for real understanding: sensory tools are not distractions.
They’re must-haves in any inclusive educational setting. When we meet autistic and Down syndrome individuals where they are and support what they need…we open the door to real connection, growth, and learning. 💛

As a mother to a wonderful autistic daughter and a niece to someone with Down syndrome, I’ve had to constantly learn, unlearn, and adapt in order to be the best companion and advocate I can be. For more than 25 years this journey has taught me the importance of understanding, patience, and equipping myself with the right tools to provide the support they deserve.❤️💛🩵
