This is the work we have to protect!

With so many new mandates, assessments, and programs competing for space, we can’t lose the practices that put students in the driver’s seat of their own learning.

Assessment for learning means students understand where they are, where they’re going, and use evidence to determine what comes next.

The math gap doesn’t begin in middle school.

It doesn’t suddenly appear when a student struggles with algebra.

For many students, it begins years earlier—with foundational mathematical ideas that never became secure. And each year, we build new mathematics on top of them.

By the time we finally identify the problem, the student may have spent years believing:

“I’m just not a math person.”

At Core Collaborative Learning Network, our Human-Centered MTSS work is pushing us to ask a different question:

What if we identified where the mathematical pathway broke down—and responded before the gap became an identity?

It’s about making learners more powerful.

When people have clarity, voice, meaningful choices, and opportunities to reflect and act, they begin to see themselves differently—not simply as participants in learning, but as people who can shape it.

That’s agency.

At The Core Collaborative, we believe the strongest systems don’t create dependence on a program, an initiative, or even an expert.

They build the capacity of people to learn together, make meaning, make decisions, and take action.

Because ultimately, the goal isn’t just better outcomes.

What does the science really say about formative assessment??

For years, we’ve treated self-assessment, peer assessment, and reflection as if they’re a hierarchy.

They’re not.

They’re thinking routines that strengthen students’ metacognitive capacity—not stages they climb.

Here’s the distinction:

🧠 Executive Function provides the cognitive capacity.
🎯 Self-Regulation directs learning toward a goal.
💭 Metacognition monitors and guides thinking within that process.

This idea builds on decades of research from Flavell, Zimmerman, Black & Wiliam, Andrade, and Hattie.

The destination has never been better teacher feedback.

The destination is learners who can increasingly monitor, evaluate, and direct their own learning.

Formative Assessment shouldn’t build dependence. It should build independence.

The future rarely announces itself.

This past weekend -- Core Collaborative Learning Network welcomed 13 extraordinary women superintendents from across the nation to our Palm Springs headquarters for an invitation-only writing retreat hosted by our sister organization, Mimi & Todd Press 💚

Inspired and led by the incomparable Dr Trudy Arriaga, hosted by Dr. Paul Bloomberg and Tony Francoeur, founders of The Core Collaborative and Mimi & Todd Press; and masterfully facilitated by Isaac Wells, Director of Publishing at Mimi & Todd Press, these extraordinary women spent two days embracing one another’s thinking, elevating one another’s voices, and distilling decades of leadership into something truly remarkable.

This wasn’t simply a writing retreat.

It was a celebration of courageous leadership, collective wisdom, and the enduring power of women learning from one another.

We’re not quite ready to share what they created.

But we can tell you this:

It will honor the voices of women who lead today while inspiring ALL leaders who will lead tomorrow.

Coming Women’s History Month --

For more than a decade, Leading Impact Teams™ has demonstrated that meaningful school improvement happens when people learn together. At its heart is Human-Centered Inquiry™—bringing people together to study diverse bodies of evidence, deepen understanding, and design better human systems.

Our early work was influenced by the National Equity Project’s Seven Circle Model, which taught us that equitable improvement requires multiple perspectives and shared inquiry.

Today, our work is anchored in Human-Centered Design. We’ve learned that complex human systems rarely respond to simple solutions. Lasting transformation doesn’t come from a single theory of action—it emerges when multiple, interconnected theories of action are intentionally designed to work together.

Rather than simplifying people, we simplify the work—creating processes that consistently lead to deeper learning, stronger relationships, and more equitable outcomes.

Because lasting improvement doesn’t happen to people.
It happens with people.

Together, we inquire.
Together, we design.
Together, we improve.
