“Success is not always what you see—sometimes, you have to dig a little deeper to uncover the true treasure.”

“While we don’t look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
-‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭4‬:‭18‬ ‭

Most people read like driving an "automatic".
Here are the "stick shift" gears for those reading with Dyslexia:
Example word: PATH
(All studied letters/digraphs/unit syllables within sight or access for student reference if necessary)
1. "First, tap the vowel."
(Student uses index and middle finger ✌️ to tap Apple Apple /a/ /a/ /a/ on desk)
2. "Check. Any tricky letters?" (ex: b-p-d)
(Student uses left hand to presents a thumbs up 👍 or down 👎to model b/p letter shape with thumb and fist (b-balloons go up in the air like the thumb goes up in the air, and p-pigs go down in the mud like the thumbs down) Student names Pigs gesture 👎, then says /p/).
3. "Touch-and-say"
(Student uses index finger to touch the P while saying /p/, touches A whiling saying /a/-apple, then touches the TH while saying /th/.
4. "Slowly blend"
(Student drags index finger below the tiles while slowly running those sounds together as /p/-/aaa/-/th/.
5. "Fast like a word"
(path)
Perfect!!!

October is !

So what is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a complex neurological condition. It's characterized by difficulties in accurate and/or fluent word recognition, and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. This lifelong condition stems from differences in the way the brain processes language, which can lead to challenges in reading comprehension, phonological processing, and working memory.

Dyslexia is quite common, affecting about 1 in 10 people worldwide. Some sources say it could be more like 1 in 5! Chances are, you know someone with dyslexia, even if you don't realize it.

Dyslexia is genetic and often runs in families. If a close relative has dyslexia, there's a higher chance you might too. But remember, not everyone in the family will have the same level of dyslexia.

Dyslexia often comes with friends—around 30-50% have ADHD, 20-40% deal with math challenges (dyscalculia), 30-40% face language issues (SLI), and others may also deal with dysgraphia, ODD, anxiety, and more. It's a package deal, but remember, it's just one part of their unique story. 💪💡

People with dyslexia possess remarkable strengths. Their minds excel in creativity, problem-solving, innovative thinking, and connecting ideas in unique ways. Dyslexics tend to have exceptional visual and spatial awareness, making them fantastic at tasks like design, art, music, sports, engineering, and strategic planning. 🌟🧠

Never Too Late
By Susan Barton

Susan Barton loves hearing from tutors about the impact Barton tutoring has had on their students, as this tutor shared:

"I am writing to tell you about a special student, who just completed level 10. Bill was 52 when he came to us, ready to do whatever it takes to learn to read.

My most memorable tutoring moment came when Bill was reading a story. He stopped in the middle of a sentence. 'I just read a three syllable word! I have never read a three syllable word before.' It was a tearful moment, and it continues to be upon each retelling.

When my service as an AmeriCorps ended, I went to work for the Adult Learning Alliance, at the state level. Thankfully, Ms. Audrey was able to take over tutoring Bill halfway through Level 5.

In Level 8 or 9, Bill remarked to Ms. Audrey, “I was sitting at home and staring at the shelf. I suddenly realized that I was reading an award I had received years ago. I have never been able to read what it says.” What an amazing achievement!

Last week was a tearful week. Bill and Ms. Audrey announced that they completed their last lesson. Our office will feel so very empty without their constancy. But what a wonderful way for Ms. Audrey to end her almost 25 years of tutoring – she is finally retiring.

We are so proud of Bill's tenacity and dedication to learn to read, especially after leaving school so many years ago.

We all want to thank you for your program. I have seen, time and again, the difference it makes for students who go through the program. "

Dyslexia is the most common reason for reading, writing, and spelling struggles.

The good news is that with the right type of program, and with enough time and intensity, students with dyslexia can learn to read, write, and spell.

Extra time ...

People with dyslexia tend to read and write slowly. So an important testing accommodation is extra time.

Some parents and teachers feel that extra time is an "unfair advantage." But research shows it greatly improves the test scores of students with dyslexia but has no impact on the scores of students who do not have dyslexia.

Thank you, Phoebe Beacham, a member of Decoding Dyslexia – Utah, for this great graphic.

People with dyslexia are often extremely bright.

With the right type of tutoring and accommodations, many of the challenges associated with dyslexia can be overcome.
