To My One-Year-Old Self,

I found your picture today.

It was just one old photograph.

Just one tiny face staring back at me from a lifetime ago.

And somehow, I couldn’t stop crying.

I kept wondering what was going through your little mind. Were you laughing because someone made a funny face? Were you reaching for your parents? Were you simply enjoying the innocence of being one year old, unaware that life was quietly writing a story far bigger than either of us could imagine?

You didn’t know who you would become.

You didn’t know what the world would ask of you.

You didn’t know that one day your dreams would become too big for the place you called home.

You didn’t know that love would eventually require distance.

You didn’t know that hope would sometimes feel heavier than fear.

You didn’t know that one day you would leave everything familiar. Not because you wanted to, but because you believed there was a future waiting for you beyond the horizon.

If I could step into that photograph, I wouldn’t tell you to dream bigger.

You already knew how to dream.

I would simply hold you a little longer.

Because one day you will spend years wishing you could do the same with the people you love.

There will come a time when home will no longer be a place you can drive to.

It will be separated by oceans.

By time zones.

By expensive plane tickets.

By missed birthdays.

By holidays celebrated through a phone screen.

By hugs that become memories instead of moments.

People will look at your life and say,

“You’re so successful.”

They’ll see the degrees.

They’ll see the title before your name.

They’ll proudly call you Dr. Villaver.

But what they won’t see are the countless nights you wondered whether all the sacrifices would be worth it.

They won’t see the loneliness that quietly sat beside you while you studied.

They won’t hear the silent prayers whispered when you were exhausted but couldn’t afford to stop.

They won’t know how many times you smiled while carrying homesickness in your heart.

Because that’s the thing about success.

People celebrate the finish line.

Very few ever notice the road that nearly broke you.

And yes…

you became Dr. Villaver.

Not a doctor who heals with medicine but a Doctor of Education. Someone who believes that changing lives begins with learning, with opportunity, with opening doors for others.

That title wasn’t handed to you.

It was earned.

Every paper.

Every sleepless night.

Every setback.

Every moment you questioned yourself.

Every sacrifice became part of those three simple letters before your name.

“Dr.”

People will read them in a second.

Only you will remember the years it took to earn them.

But if I’m being completely honest…

If life offered me one wish…

Only one…

It wouldn’t be for another degree.

It wouldn’t be for more money.

It wouldn’t even be for an easier life.

My one wish would be this:

I wish I didn’t have to work thousands of miles, across an ocean, just to become the person you dreamed of becoming.

I wish success had found us closer to home.

I wish the people who loved us most had been there for every victory, every failure, every ordinary Tuesday that somehow felt impossible.

I wish I hadn’t learned that sometimes dreams come true only after saying goodbye to the place that first taught you how to dream.

Because no achievement, no matter how meaningful can completely replace hearing your family’s laughter in the next room.

No diploma can hug you.

No title can cook your favorite meal.

No award can replace time.

And time…

is the one thing no amount of success can ever give back.

Still…

If I could rewrite our story, I don’t think I would erase the struggle.

Because the struggle made us.

It taught us resilience when comfort couldn’t.

It taught us courage when certainty disappeared.

It taught us gratitude for things we once overlooked.

It taught us that strength isn’t measured by how little you cry.

Strength is measured by how many times you wipe away your tears, and keep going anyway.

Looking at your picture today, I realized something.

I wasn’t crying because I pitied you.

I was crying because “I was proud of you”.

Proud that such a small child grew into someone who refused to give up.

Someone who crossed oceans carrying nothing but faith, education, and hope.

Someone who kept believing that a better life was possible, even when the road felt endless.

Someone who became the first version of himself that his younger heart would have admired.

Little one…

You will lose sleep.

You will lose certainty.

You will miss people.

You will miss home.

There will be moments when loneliness feels louder than celebration.

But you will never lose your purpose.

One day, students will learn because you chose not to quit.

Lives will be changed because you believed education matters.

Doors will open for others because you dared to walk through the difficult ones first.

And that…

is a legacy no ocean can wash away.

So today, as I wipe away these tears, I want you to know something.

You were never just a little boy in an old photograph.

You were the beginning of every sacrifice.

The beginning of every dream.

The beginning of every prayer.

The beginning of Dr. Villaver.

And if I could hug you one last time, I would whisper only this:

“You won’t have an easy life. You will have a meaningful one. You will leave home with a heavy heart, but you will carry your family’s dreams wherever you go. One day, people will know you as Dr. Villaver, but the title will never be your greatest achievement. Your greatest achievement will be that you never let distance, loneliness, or hardship convince you to stop believing in the little child who dared to dream.”

Thank you for believing before you knew what belief would cost.

I hope I’ve made you proud.

With all my love,

Your old self,
Dr. Villaver

Before this year ends, I would like to take a moment to thank all the scholars who trusted my research consultation services.

This year, I published six journal articles, completed six research consultations, reached 130 citations, and achieved 100,000 reads and downloads across online platforms such as ResearchGate, Academia, and Google Scholar. I also served as a research consultant and peer reviewer for international journals.

In 2026, I already have three confirmed research consultations at the master’s and publication levels.

These numbers may not be the biggest in terms of reach compared to others, but they represent a huge leap toward something greater. They are proof that we don’t just talk the talk, we walk the walk.

If you need research assistance, send me a DM at [email protected]
