Happy World Doula Week! Being a doula is about supporting women in ways that make them believe in their own inherent strength, courage, and beauty. It's sharing information, witnessing without judgment, holding space with love, amplifying vulnerable voices, being a calm and steady presence, and believing in women with such conviction that they can't help but also believe in themselves.

I am immensely grateful that I had a doula who did all of that for me, (love you ). I am equally grateful that I've had the opportunity to step into doula work myself. I never take for granted the trust that women are placing in me to accompany them in the most vulnerable and transformative moments of their lives. Doula work is humbling, awe-inspiring, and sacred.

One of the best things about being a doula is the community. The other doulas I have the privilege to work with are endlessly supportive and inspiring. When I am in spaces with them I believe that anything is possible because they are strong, fearless, beautiful souls who make me believe that I have the power to be so as well.

One of the best parts of doula work in the RGV is the incredible community of birth workers I've connected with who are also dedicated to providing high-quality, respectful reproductive care. is owned by Jen Gabler, LM, CPM-- a knowledgable and caring provider who always centers safety and respect in her practice. In addition to attending home births, she operates a beautiful birth center in Brownsville. I am so grateful for the opportunities I've had to connect and work with her and look forward to many more collaborations in the future 💖🌙. Happy Heart of Gaia Midwifery Services !

Holy Family Services, holds such a special place in my heart as a woman, a mother, and a doula. It is a place I am always eager to celebrate, especially this week for !
My first experience with midwifery care was during pregnancy, and they embodied the spirit of -- "all people birth safely with dignity and love... with birth care that is family centered, midwife-led, and respects all people" in all of the ways that I needed. I also had the privilege of supporting my first birth as a doula in collaboration with the exceptional midwifery team at this beautiful place.
As a client, former employee, and current collaborator in women's health work, I am proud to support an organization that does so much for the women and families of the RGV community as well as the larger midwifery community. Happy Birth Center Week Holy Family Services, Inc - Birth Center !

"Access to community based midwifery care is more important than ever. Community birth centers led by Black, Indigenous, people of color, meet community needs for safe, high-quality, culturally reverent care." Birth centers and midwifery care meet these needs in ways that many other medical institutions either cannot or will not. We must protect these sacred spaces of care for all women and families who want them.

Why are birth centers so important? As mentioned earlier in the week, birth centers are the only healthcare facilities based in the midwifery model of care! And they have significant benefits to the community including: reduced rates of preterm birth and low birthweight, reduced instance of cesarean, lower healthcare system costs, improved breastfeeding rates, and support for the entire family in building a foundation for raising healthy, thriving children.

Yesterday I shared a video about the history of midwifery care in the USA to kick off Birth Center Week 2025. Today we're diving in further to give more context answering the questions "What is a birth center?" and "What is a midwife?"

Today kicks off Birth Center Week 2025. To understand the importance and benefits of birth centers, it's crucial to understand that birth centers are the ONLY healthcare facilities that operate based on the midwifery model of care. I highly encourage everyone to watch this short video about the history of midwifery care in the USA. After you watch, share something you learned in the comments!

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Ovarian Cancer can be difficult to detect, it's important to know your body and be proactive about your health concerns. Those with family or personal history of breast or pelvic cancers or BRCA gene mutations may benefit from more specific screenings than just a standard annual pelvic exam. Speak to your healthcare provider about your personal and family health history to determine your level of risk and make decisions about testing and care.

September 10th is World Su***de Prevention Day. 3 Lunas Doula is committed to working to create a shift from a culture of silence around su***de to one of empathy and support. If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, please reach out to a trusted person for support. You can call or text 988 or access www.988lifeline.org for crisis support. Help is available in English and Spanish as well as for hearing impaired.

Doulas are often community resource experts, they can help connect clients to mental health professionals in the community or other resources for mental health support. This work is something I am deeply passionate about for both professional and personal reasons. As a doula, I am acutely aware that su***de is a leading cause of perinatal death. It accounts for approximately 20% of postpartum deaths, and I believe that many of these would be preventable if new mothers had adequate access to resources and support. As someone who has struggled with mental health myself, and witnessed others close to me struggling as well, I know how critical it is to have access to mental health services and the support of community. I lost a close friend to su***de in early adulthood, and I often wonder how that may have ended differently if there was less stigma and more resources available to support mental health.
