[04/29/21]   An abbreviated (as much as possible) email from conditioning coach Joel Jamieson of 8WeeksOut:
"A few years ago, I was hired to fly to China to help a Judo team prepare for the China National Games.One of the first things I did when was introduce them to heart rate monitors during their training. My goal was to help show them how to manage training intensities, improve recovery, and monitor progress.To get started, I told their head coach that we needed to get accurate maximum heart rates for all the athletes. The old 220-age formula is next to useless, I suggested we do a few 400m sprints and record their heart rates.
She agreed and the next day we went out to the track and did exactly that. It seemed to me like we were off to a good start, but the problem was what happened next...
Instead of using heart rate as a tool to manage intensity, the coach used it as a weapon to maximize intensity. Unfortunately, it didn't work out quite the way that I expected. Now that she knew each athlete's max heart rate, she expected them to hit it in every single training session.Heart rate became her measuring stick for whether or not the athletes were working hard enough. To her if the didn't hit max heart rate, it meant they weren't.
It was madness.The reason I share this story is that because while it might sound crazy, it's not really that different from how most use a heart rate monitor today.
It's common for people to make driving their heart rate as high as possible a personal challenge. Like it's a test of their mental toughness. Almost every group class that uses heart rate training rewards people for training at the highest intensities possible. This is also madness. This is usually built on some FAULTY fitness logic: higher heart rate = more intense = better results.
There are really only three ways to use a heart rate monitor in the first place:
-Gauge training intensity
-Measure and track conditioning
-Improve pacing and energy management."

JWP. A combat sports veteran, legend and still learning. Another lesson in cutting weight and hydrating. Really glad that One FC implemented this measure to keep their fighters safe. For myself and students, take notes from this legend John Wayne Parr.

Well my first hydration test was a complete disaster. I was hoping I could find a loop hole in the system for an advantage but it ended up costing me big time.
I woke up 77.2kg weigh-in day. I went down to the treadmill and got down to 76kg hoping I’d be able drink a litre of water to be hydrated.
But after losing 8kg in 4 days I was ridiculously dry & dehydrated and failed hydration test by a mile.
The One Championship staff suggested I drink 2litres of water to hydrate then go straight to treadmill to run it off.
I was now 77.8kg. So for the second time that day I put on my sweat clothes and ran on treadmill for an hour. When I went to check my weight again now 76.3kg & Easily under the 77kg limit. Problem was I still failed hydration test.
That was at 4pm. The staff said 2nd weigh in will be at 8pm.
The staff told me “You have already lost 20% of your prize money so weight no longer an issue. You need to drink plenty of water until you pass hydration test otherwise you’re not allowed to fight”.
Weigh-in started 1pm. After drinking 4 litres of water and 6 failed hydration tests. I didn’t pass hydration test until 11pm that night and now finally the fight was officially on.
I started the day 76kg but they don’t take offical weight until you pass hydration [email protected] after 4 litres of water came in at 80kg 🤦🏻‍♂️!
Massive lesson learnt on my part. Because of my hip I couldn’t run and because I couldn’t run my weight didn’t move. I will rectify this problem for my next camp so this doesn’t happen again.
I want to apologise for my misjudgment to @onechampionship, Mr @yodchatri and of course to my opponent @niekyholzken and the embarrassment I bought upon myself for not doing my job correctly 🙏🏻.

[04/10/21]   I've taken a day to process this and wanted to speak on it now. My fight didn't happen. Here's the short rundown of it. I was offered a fight on 1 week notice, and decided to take it. I was significantly over the weight but my pride got the better of me and I decided to try and make weight. Got my bloodwork and medical exams done all in one day on my dime. My coach and I flew out Monday morning to try and cut the tremendous amount to make the limit (you don't even want to know) all while stuck in a hotel. Then come to find out the lab here in SA messed up my bloodwork so I had to get lab work done again the day of weigh in. It was painful, horrible and of course I still was over. We offered a portion of my purse and even to cap my weight gain overnight and the commission actually agreed. My opponent decided not to take the fight and I don't blame him, it's not on him to make weight it's my responsibility. These are the facts, I'm always training but wasn't prepping for a weight cut, and haven't taken a fight in about 5 yrs. My coach is supportive and did the best he could with the time and situation we had, Combate Global was great and I can't say enough good things about the promotion. Again, no excuses just facts, and this goes against what I tell my students who want to compete. I always tell them to stay ready don't get ready. I'm 36 and only have a couple of good years of mma competition left. I figured why not at least try and if I fail so be it. I will do better to lead by example for my students. I want to thank all my teammates, coaches and especially my family for your support. Nothing more to say or do but get back to baseline and continue grinding. Thank you all again, I wouldn't be able to persevere without your support. Hoping there's a few more opportunities in the near future with Combate Global who treated me so awesome.

I don't know how many times I've had to say this. There's no belt ranking system in Muay Thai. Any belt system a school has, its internal and exclusive to their school ONLY and doesn't mean anything elsewhere. Nothing wrong with having an internal ranking system, but it only serves as a benchmark for your own students and bears nothing in competition or how you're matched up.

A Word of Caution—Ranking Systems in Muay Thai - Zebra Athletics By Kaitlin Young. Any ranking system that exists for Muay Thai is entirely made up by whichever school or association it falls under.
