The partnerships we build with families make a difference for our students.

Kenia Garcia Miralrio has three daughters in North East ISD. Her youngest two are at Walzem Elementary School, where Miralrio serves as PTA president. She believes in being involved, but for Miralrio, that involvement has grown into something bigger. As her children have grown, so has her relationship with Walzem’s Family Specialist Nelly Alvarez.

“She’s a friend now. We understand each other,” said Miralrio. “Like mom to mom. We help each other. We support each other.”

That relationship is exactly what NEISD’s family specialists work to build.

Our family specialists are located at all 32 NEISD Title I campuses, connecting families with resources and opportunities that strengthen the connection between home and school. In addition, family engagement liaisons provide support at our other campuses.

Recently, Miralrio joined about 20 other parents at Walzem to learn more about those resources through our District’s Family Engagement Leadership Academy. Throughout the school year, the Academy offers parents, grandparents and guardians classes focused on parenting, life skills, academic skills and health.

“We want to support them, so they can support their students,” said Alvarez. “We try to provide classes that give parents the tools they need to support their children’s learning at home.”

For Miralrio, the support is exactly what she needs for herself and her girls.

“I feel my girls have advanced academically because I am present and involved,” said Miralrio. “It also helps me feel useful to be able to help the school and give back to the community.”

That’s the goal of family engagement. It gives parents tools and support. It strengthens the connections between families and schools. And it ultimately helps our students succeed. 🤝

There is no shortage of challenges when it comes to keeping North East ISD schools cool, especially the 100-degree-plus heat Texas is known for.

But with Bond 2025 and our experienced technicians’ constant monitoring, NEISD has been proactively maintaining and updating its HVAC systems to help ensure our classrooms stay cool.

These updates are extremely important because poor air-conditioning and ventilation impairs student learning. According to a Harvard study, students have a 12.3% higher chance of failing an exam on a 90-degree day than if they had taken the exam on a 72-degree day, but cool classrooms change everything. The study predicts that the benefits of installing and operating these systems would far outweigh the costs.

Through Bond 2025, NEISD allocated about $89 million to update these cooling systems, or 18.4% of the $483 million bond approved by voters in November. Crews have already replaced air-cooled chillers at several campuses this summer, including Roan Forest, Oak Meadow and Wetmore elementary schools, with more to come.

NEISD also will replace air-handlers that ventilate classrooms and other large spaces and direct digital control systems that regulate the temperature and control when HVAC systems turn on and off.

But the work isn’t done once these brand-new machines are installed. Our experienced and dedicated technicians in the Facility Maintenance & Operation department work year-round to keep these systems running optimally. They clean the condenser coils regularly and ensure lines don’t get clogged. They inspect fan motors, monitor fluid levels and close off access to the machines so raccoons, who like to eat the wires, can’t get to them. They work off a rotation to ensure they get to every one of our campuses and facilities.

“It takes an army to keep all these machines running,” said Mike Sendejo, Facilities Maintenance director.

With this maintenance, the vital machines purchased with Bond 2025 funds will last for years to come, protecting our taxpayers’ pockets and helping our students focus on what matters – their education.

Lillian Daines prepared to start her senior year in high school by going back to where her educational journey started. 🎒

She spent part of the summer as an intern helping Castle Hills Elementary School Master Teacher Hannah Norman prepare for the new school year. Turns out, it was the perfect internship opportunity for her.

Lillian enjoys working with kids and went to school at Castle Hills when she was little. In fact, Mrs. Norman was her twin brother’s kindergarten teacher.

“Coming back here has been just such a joy,” said Lillian. “But there is so much that goes into it, I didn’t even realize how much stuff goes into getting a classroom ready. I think it gives me a lot more real-world experience.”

Lillian is beginning her senior year at the International School of the Americas (ISA), North East ISD’s tuition-free magnet high school focused on developing globally-minded students with a curriculum designed to nurture curiosity.

ISA doesn’t just help students grow in the classroom; they are required to gain professional experience through a career internship.

“If it weren’t for ISA requiring me to do an internship, I wouldn’t be here and I love it here. It’s so much fun,” said Lillian. “I am in a classroom. I am seeing the behind-the-scenes of what is required to have a kindergarten classroom from a master teacher who is nationally board certified. I think it’s going to be good for my college applications to have an internship.”

Career internships give students the chance to take learning beyond the classroom and discover what a future career actually looks like. For Lillian, returning to Castle Hills means giving back to the school community that helped shape her while gaining hands-on experience, skills and confidence she can carry into college and beyond.

“I can’t say enough good things about ISA. I love it so much. I love the people, I love our principal and everything is good about it,” she said.

Lillian, thank you for giving back to the school where your journey began. We wish you the best as you begin your senior year with your sights set on an exciting future working with kids. 💙

We hope everyone is having a great start to the school year! A friendly reminder to everyone to please slow down and stay extra alert in and around school zones. 🚨🚌

With more children walking, biking, and being dropped off and picked up, a few extra seconds can make a big difference. Please obey posted speed limits, watch carefully for students and crossing guards, and avoid distractions while driving.

Let’s work together to keep our students, families, staff, and neighbors safe. Thank you for slowing down, staying alert, and helping make our school community a safe place for everyone!

“Some of my favorite memories are just being on the bus with my teammates.”

When Nate Pearson was a student athlete at Churchill High School, he created plenty of fond memories on the buses to and from games. This year, he will be making more memories from the driver’s seat. 🚌

Pearson recently returned to North East ISD as a math acceleration teacher and football coach at Eisenhower Middle School – back where those memories began.

“It holds a special place in my heart,” said Pearson. “All the memories I have of being an athlete, all of our coaches drove us to and from all the competitions.”

So, this summer, Pearson trained with the NEISD Transportation Training Team to earn his commercial driver’s license (CDL). NEISD employs state-certified bus driver trainers who ensure our drivers are ready for the road. Each new bus driver receives behind-the-wheel instruction covering skills like turning, parking and safe student loading and unloading.

But Pearson didn’t just acquire new skills. He created a new path to connect with his players — and one more memory.

“I drove my first bus out of Heroes Stadium, where I used to play football,” said Pearson. “It was a magical and full circle moment.”

If you see something that doesn’t seem right, trust your instincts and speak up. Whether it’s concerning online activity, bullying, threats or something that could put others at risk, reporting it can make all the difference.
