Research helps patients when it reaches the dental chair.

That's the goal of a new national center co-led by Rahma Mungia, BDS, MSc, DDPHRCS, of the School of Dentistry and funded with nearly $2 million from the National Institutes of Health.

Its first focus is pulpotomy, a procedure that removes inflamed tissue while keeping the healthy pulp in the roots. For select patients, it may relieve pain and save the tooth without a referral to a specialist. The center will train general dentists to offer it safely.

September is , and healthy gums do more than protect your smile. Research links gum disease to diabetes, heart disease and other chronic conditions. 🦷

Bleeding when you brush? Gums pulling back from your teeth? Those can be early signs worth checking out.

Our board-certified periodontists at UT Dentistry specialize in diagnosing and treating gum disease, and no referral is needed. Visit https://bit.ly/3VJWe3b or call 210-450-3715 to make an appointment.

Over the past three months, six white coat ceremonies have taken place across five of the six health professional schools at UT San Antonio. Each one marks the moment students step from classroom to calling. It's more than a garment. It's a promise to lead with compassion, ethics and lifelong learning from day one.

For our School of Dentistry students, that promise can be personal. Ayden Garcia, whose passion to become a dentist stems from a family member’s lack of access to proper dental care, said the coat means he's no longer just watching problems happen. "Now it's on me to fix them," he shared.

100 incoming DDS students. 22 International Dentist Education Program students. 30 Dental Hygiene students. All now carrying that same commitment forward.
