Our School of Dentistry graduates are answering a real need. Areas of Texas face shortages in dental care, and our students and residents train in the clinics and communities where that shortage is felt.

Students gain hands-on clinical experience in diverse care settings and often continue their education and careers within the same health systems. Those pathways prepare our graduates to deliver exceptional patient care and build the talent pipeline Texas is counting on.

As another back-to-school season comes to a close, we’re celebrating a record-breaking summer of community outreach for the School of Dentistry and the many students, faculty and volunteers who helped make it possible.

Our teams recently wrapped up a busy stretch of back-to-school activities including events at Palo Alto College, Edison High School and an AHEC event at San Martin de Porres Church, connecting with families across San Antonio and sharing resources to help everyone start the school year with healthy smiles.

During these events, our volunteers:
👩‍⚕️ Helped children explore the world of dentistry and imagine themselves as future dentists at the career exploration station
🦷 Provided dental screenings and oral health education
🪥 Distributed toothbrushes and toothpaste to children and adults

A special thank you to our student volunteers from the Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) and their faculty advisor, Dr. Evan, to Dr. Meiners and Dr. Pineda, along with all of the students, faculty and team members who gave their time throughout the summer.

We’re grateful to the organizations and community partners who welcomed us and gave us so many opportunities to connect with our neighbors, share oral health resources and help make dental care and education more accessible.

From finding his path to building a career in dentistry, Dr. Joshua Austin’s journey has deep San Antonio roots. 🦷🎙️

A UTSA alumnus and graduate of the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry, Dr. Austin joins the UT San Antonio Alumni Association's Birds Up Podcast to reflect on the experiences that shaped his path, including his decision to pursue dentistry, his time as a dental student and the realities of navigating a high-pressure profession.

Today, Dr. Austin is a nationally recognized dentist, educator and speaker who continues to give back to the profession and stay connected to the School of Dentistry community.
