Rock hounds know this feeling.

You’re standing ankle-deep in clear river water, looking down through all those little ripples, and one rock catches the light just right. Suddenly it has stripes, color, little veins running through it, maybe a bit of sparkle. In the water it looks like something you should probably put in a display case.

So of course you pick it up.

You turn it over a few times. Hold it up to the sun. Decide this one is definitely coming home.

Then a few hours later it dries out and somehow turns into the most ordinary gray rock you’ve ever seen.

Doesn’t matter.

Because now it isn’t just a rock. It’s the place you found it. The cold water around your ankles. The sun on the river. The little stop you made that day. That is why some of us end up with jars, shelves, pockets and entire corners of the house full of rocks that probably look completely unremarkable to everybody else.

And yes, before anyone asks, this was outside the state park. You cannot take rocks from inside Pedernales Falls State Park.

The best part of a trip is usually the thing nobody bothered to plan.

You can spend weeks picking the hotel, checking maps, figuring out what time everything opens, and making sure you “don’t waste the day.”

Then you see something weird.

That’s it. Plans are over.

Next thing you know, you’re standing under a giant robot in a parking lot, taking a picture like this was obviously the reason you came to New Mexico in the first place.

Those are always the parts I remember most. The wrong turn. The weird building. The roadside thing that made everybody in the car go, “Wait… what the hell is that?”

The planned stuff is usually great.

The random stuff is what turns into the story you keep telling.

Nothing hijacks your attention quite like finding something outside that you were not expecting to find.

I found this little starfish washed up one day, and for the next few minutes that was apparently the most important thing happening in the world.

I had no clue if it was still alive. No clue how long it had been sitting there. No clue if putting it back would actually help. So I did the only thing that made sense to me and put it back in the water.

I have no idea if it lived. I really hope it did.

And that is exactly what happens when somebody finds something weird outside. Suddenly everyone nearby has stopped what they were doing. We are passing it around, looking at it from every angle, guessing what it is, how old it might be, where it came from, and talking with a level of confidence that is completely unsupported by actual knowledge.

A bone. A shell. A feather. A strange little creature. A piece of glass. A cool rock.

Doesn’t matter.

For a few minutes, grown adults turn into curious kids again, and honestly, I love that.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve found lately?

You know the moment. The one where everybody has spent years asking why you still have that stupid thing.

It’s been moved from one drawer to another, survived at least two clean-outs, and probably has no business still being in the house. You’ve almost thrown it away yourself a dozen times.

Then one day somebody is standing there with a very specific problem and says, “Wait… do you still have that thing?”

And suddenly you are not a hoarder. You are prepared.

Now you’re digging through the drawer like a surgeon going in for a very delicate procedure, trying not to look too pleased with yourself because this is the exact moment you’ve been waiting for.

And when you finally pull it out?

Oh, that feeling is ridiculous.

Not because the thing mattered. Because for one beautiful minute, keeping random crap for years was completely justified.

There is something about being outside that makes even the uncomfortable parts feel worth it.

You can be sweating through your shirt, swatting bugs off your legs, breathing harder than you want to admit, and wondering why the hell you thought climbing any higher was a good idea. The sun can be beating down, the trail can be rough, your shoes can be full of dust, and there is usually at least one moment where sitting somewhere with air conditioning sounds like the smarter choice.

Then you stop.

The wind hits you a little cooler up high. The noise drops away. You can see the river cutting through the trees below, the hills stretching out farther than you expected, and all that complaining suddenly feels pretty small.

That is the part I love about being outside. It does not have to be comfortable to be good. Sometimes being hot, tired, dirty, scratched up, or a little miserable is just part of getting somewhere that makes you forget all about it for a minute.

And somehow, those are usually the days you remember.

I know somebody reading this has done this.

Bagging your dog’s s**t and leaving it beside the trail is one of those moves where people act like they deserve partial credit. And sure, I guess it’s nice you didn’t leave it where somebody could step in it. Real thoughtful of you.

But then you just left a little green bag of dog s**t sitting out in nature for somebody else to deal with.

We have all seen it. Hell, somebody in here probably does it and tells themselves they’re coming back for it on the way out. Maybe once in a while you do. Most of the time, you don’t.

If you could carry the bag in, and your dog could do what dogs do, I feel pretty confident you can carry it back out too. That was the whole job.

There are a lot of things I could happily never deal with again.

Passwords. Group texts that won’t die. People who stop in the middle of the grocery aisle. Whatever fresh nonsense my phone decided needed an update overnight.

But I can still lose ten minutes watching a storm roll in. I’ll pick up a rock like I just discovered buried treasure. I’ll point out the moon to another grown adult who has definitely seen it before. And if a song I haven’t heard since 1998 comes on, apparently every single word has been stored safely in my brain while the location of my keys was deemed unnecessary information.

And yes, I will absolutely stop what I’m doing to watch a squirrel do squirrel s**t in a tree.

Some things just never get old. I hope they never do.

There’s a version of getting away that has nothing to do with going far.

It’s waking up somewhere like this and realizing the day has not made any demands yet.

Nobody has decided what time breakfast has to happen. Nobody is checking how long the drive is to the next thing. Nobody is trying to squeeze six stops into one afternoon because “we’re already here.”

You just sit there for a minute.

Then somebody says the water looks good.

So that becomes the plan.

An hour later maybe you’re still there. Maybe somebody found a place to eat. Maybe you wandered into a little store you had no reason to stop at. Maybe the whole day keeps getting rearranged by whatever sounds better than the thing you were supposedly going to do.

That’s the kind of day I think a lot of us are actually craving.

Not a big escape.

Just one day where nothing feels urgent enough to ruin it.

There’s a certain amount of land where getting dressed starts to feel less like a requirement and more like a courtesy.

My dad has apparently found that amount.

This is his place in New Braunfels, and if you ever show up unannounced, just understand there is absolutely no guarantee the man will be fully clothed.

Honestly, that might be the whole point of having land.

Enough room to do what you want, enough trees that nobody needs to know, and if somebody still manages to see something they weren’t expecting...

Well, they came a long way for that show.

There’s always one thing that can hijack a perfectly good moment.

You can be standing somewhere beautiful, looking at the water, the sky, the moon, whatever it is that made you stop in the first place.

Then somebody says they saw a snake.

That’s it.

Nobody cares about the view anymore.

Now everybody is looking at the same patch of ground, arguing about where it went, how big it was, whether it was actually a snake, and somehow the person who barely saw it has become the leading expert.

And the funny part is, that’s usually the part you remember later.

Not the perfect view.

The five minutes everybody spent trying to find the damn snake.

Photo location: Somewhere in Idaho, I think. I did not label this photo and its in a random order from when I was there. There also was a snake.
