For some music is learning how to sight read popular tunes, and for others it is a life-long pursuit. I believe the role of a music teacher is to give the student as many opportunities to experience music as possible while in their studio. Variety
I believe variety helps students retain concepts longer, so my teaching will include various methods to actively engage the student in musical learning at or away from the bench. Curriculum
My curriculum includes composition, sight-reading, and even sight-singing to develop each student’s ear and provide the foundation for any musical study. Excellence
I believe in providing a standard of excellence that encourages productive and fulfilling music study for each student. To meet this standard, I allow all students to perform in recitals and group lessons, enter competitions if interested, develop their own identity as a musician, and follow the curriculum and/or repertoire chosen by the student and teacher. Parental Involvement
I believe parental involvement makes all the difference for a student, especially at the early stages of lessons. When concepts from the lessons are reinforced in the home, it is an invaluable support to me as a teacher. Practice
My practice expectations consist of developing independence, responsibility, and satisfying progression to the student. I help students develop independence and responsibility by having them set goals for their practice sessions, complete assignments, and practice for an appropriate amount of time. I encourage students to further explore music beyond the material covered in lessons, finding satisfaction in what they study, and their own musical niche. Overall, I believe pursuing music is fun! The joy of music study extends far beyond playing notes; it is learning new concepts, listening to all different kinds of music, enjoying musical activities with other students, composing meaningful music to the student, and acquiring tools to better appreciate music for the rest of your life.
