Today, we are practicing phonemic awareness skills in our mud kitchen! We just love nature based, hands-on opportunities to test phonemic awareness skills. For this activity, we collected a few items from our backyard and glued them onto flaps on a piece of construction paper. On the inside, we wrote the sound for the item. For example, I might glue a stick to one and then on the inside write the beginning sound as /s/. The beauty of this activity is it is basically free because I'm using items around my home, and I can tailor it to the sounds I want to work on.

Here is an easy, low-prep activity for practicing those phonemic awareness skills. Bubble foam! I whipped it up in under 5 minutes using my blender, bath soap, water, and a few drops of food coloring (recipe below). We tossed in some animals, sponges, and kitchen utensils. They played and I prompted learning by occasionally quizzing my oldest with questions like

Q: What’s the first sound in lion?
A: /l/

Q: What’s the last sound in lion?
A: /n/

Q: What’s the first sound in foam?
A: /f/

Q: Can you say foam, but instead of /f/, can you use /l/? (Did you know it really is a word!?)
A: Loam

As an added bonus, this turned into a great opportunity to wash our play equipment. 😉🤣

Recipe:
Step 1: Add 1/4 cup of body wash and 1/2 cup of water and a few drops of food coloring to the mixer or blender.

Step 2: Mix everything together on high speed until it forms stiff peaks (like whipped cream).

Step 3: Empty the bubbles in a large bin or empty bath tub. Repeat the process with different colors.

Parents are invited to come learn the most important foundational skill that is absolutely essential to reading and spelling success. Join us as we discuss what the research says, our current stats on the Nations Report Card for reading (spoiler alert - it's not good news), why so many kids are currently struggling to master reading skills, and most importantly - what you can do at home to guarantee reading success. Parents leave with a packet of resources, tips, guides, and fun activities to do at home.
