Happy New Year! For many this time of year is one of promise and excitement for the upcoming year. The future holds ideas and visions of opportunities. Planners are bought with the anticipation of great things to come. For others, the idea of planning for the upcoming months feels a bit like stepping, blindfolded, into the future.

If you're a mom who is getting ready to begin life as an empty nester, you might have additional feelings that seem to be at your heels. Memories of your toddler running around the house, the feeling of their energy filling the house and echoes of belly laughs probably sneak up on you, tugging at your heart.

You might find yourself , like I did, reviewing your parenting, from different stages of your child's life. Did I do enough? Have I instilled the values that will see them through life and lead them to making good choices? Can they change a tire? Will they remember not to use a metal fork to get toast out of the toaster? You get the idea, all kinds of thoughts start popping into our heads. As the time for your new adult child to head out to their exciting future approaches, you might find that you have a whirlwind of emotions and thoughts swirling in your mind and heart. You're probably noticing that your hugs are a little tighter and last a little longer.

There's another side to this time too. Emotions are high. Your son/daughter is feeling a mix of emotions too. They're excited, scared, unsure, sure, confident, not completely confident, they can't wait to leave, starting to really realize that they aren't going to be home anymore. They are also in a whirlwind. When the two whirlwinds collide, it can create the perfect or ,should we say, the imperfect and unwanted storm. Some of my most emotion filled and heated "discussions" happened during this time, with my kids. Then the panic, of possible damage to our relationship, would set in and I wanted things to get "fixed" as soon as possible so we could get back to the business of enjoying every minute we could before they moved out.

There's good news! No, great news! Those amazing connections will still be there. They'll grow into a new relationship and you'll rediscover yourself, your partner and even your adult kids.
