Congratulations to Jorge Cruz, who has been awarded a research grant by the Fulbright Student Program. Jorge is a PhD student in Economics in the Alvarez College of Business. Jorge will travel to Chile next year to investigate how Chilean stakeholders have adopted and reinterpreted the U.S. Small Business Development Center (SBDC) model. Jorge will research how Chile has built a nationwide system of Centros de Desarrollo de Negocios (CDNs), which includes studying programs run by UT San Antonio’s Center for Global Development, which has worked in Chile since 2015.

Congratulations to Mariel Ortega, masters student in Environmental Sciences at UT San Antonio, who was selected to the Fulbright Student Program! Mariel will travel to South Korea to conduct a research project titled Soundscapes as Cultural Bridges: Birds, Urbanization, and Human-Nature Relationships in Korea. She will work with Dr. Jang Yikweon at Ewha Womans Univestiy in Seoul to record birdsong and interview residents about their connections to birdsong and nature. Mariel speaks fluent Korean and has visited South Korea multiple times through study abroad and personal trips. Come join us in the first floor of the Honors College on April 16 at 12:00 to learn about the Fulbright Student Program and how to travel abroad in 2027-2028. Students who will graduate by Spring 2027 can apply to Fulbright this summer to travel the following year. Fulbright allows students to teach, research, or pursue a Master’s degree abroad. Congratulations to Jorge Vanegas, 2026 Goldwater Scholar! Jorge is one of two UT San Antonio students to win this year. 454 scholarships nationwide were awarded for the 2026-2027 academic year. Jorge plans to earn a Chemical Engineering PhD focused on bioengineering applications. At UT San Antonio, Jorge participated in the ESTEEMED, Pre-PhD program. Across labs with Dr. Romero at UT San Antonio and REUs at Stanford and TU Darmstadt, Jorge has conducted research in tissue engineering and new scaffold devices.

Congratulations to Olivia Aubone, 2026 Goldwater Scholar - one of two UT San Antonio students to win this year. Olivia was selected as one of 454 new scholars this year nationally out of almost 1500 applicants. Olivia conducts research on model theory with Drs. Duenez and Iovino and plans to pursue a PhD in Mathematics, conducting research in pure mathematics. Olivia is the first ever Math major from UT San Antonio to win a Goldwater Scholarship! .collegeofsciences .success

Congratulations to Rowdy, who has been selected to the prestigious Rhodesrunner Fellowship! Rowdy will travel next year to United Kingdom to pursue a master’s degree in ornithology, conducting research on bird migration…. April Fools’! But we do want to help YOU study in the UK. Check out the National Institutes of Health Undergraduate Research Scholarship, which provides up to 20,000 in funding, summer internships at NIH and career placement after graduation. Deadline is March 31 but faculty can submit recs by April 7. .success
