Day 3 of our Tween yoga and mindfulness camp on Niyama lessons!
•
Today is learning about Svadhyaya or self-study and being curious!
•
We broke down poses to understand where we need to be strong-or soft in our body to stabilize or open up to a shape; We tried to eat mindfully, step by step using all senses; Asked curious questions about curious objects.
•
Heart and belly breath to connect with deep breathing in contrast to an energizing breath.
•
Yoga teaches 5 NIYAMA lessons which are about personal observances : saucha (cleanliness), santosha (contentment), tapas (perseverance), svadhyaya (self-study) and ishvara pranidhana (trust). I adapted the lessons to help tweens navigate this tricky stage of development, making them relevant and useful in their own experiences. It’s my hope they use it as a guide in becoming the best version of themselves 💞✨

My New Year’s Eve birthday photo taken by my daughter from the charming little town of Wimberley, TX
•
2024 was dotted by wondrous tween and children yoga camps, ashtanga intensives with teaching adults at the YSSA
•
I am feeling a pivot in working with children, but sharing yoga and its benefits to the young and old remains my home base, along with my yoga practice
•
Wishes of good health, love and laughter to everyone 💛💗💚 May this year be our best one yet!!!

How do you say goodbye to your yoga teacher whom you never met yet?
Just as I am settling in into the greater ashtanga community and was getting more excited for his visit that our shala was hosting this weekend.…suddenly and sadly now, he had passed. And I cannot explain how affected I was, sobbing uncontrollably when I was given the news that he is gone. Sadness, longing for my (future) yoga teacher “that got away”…?
His joy was in sharing all that he learned about yoga and its health benefits to as many people. “It is not just the postures and how to bend bodies but also to care for others.. (paraphrase )” - Sharath Jois
Each time I step into my mat to practice, my body moves mindfully through every inhale and exhale. It tunes me inward to a keen awareness of the physical sensations that surface and the abilities I did not know I had, to move from the challenge of one pose to another. My yoga teacher, , in this tradition of mysore-style ashtanga practice, sees me and guides me forward; she teaches me the things she learned directly from him, her own guru, Sharathji.
The tapas of practice bear fruits from steady and earnest effort, with sweat, tears, and yes, even pain at times. You come away with a deeper understanding of yourself and a sense of clarity from the process. Transformation is happening from the inside out as you realize you are transcending the mat practice. And you are not in a space of ego but of humble perseverance and grace. Somehow, you want to feel rightly connected not just with your own body, mind and Spirit, but with others as well.
Even if I will never get to meet Sharath in person, I feel rootedness in his legacy. No goodbye. The light from this parampara burns bright in this community - on and off every yoga mat, from mine to another.
Thank you for your teachings and the beautiful and strong community you built all around the world. You were so respected and loved and I feel blessed to be part of it.
Thank you

Do you take time to affirm yourself and remember you are unique? creative? capable? Or to say to yourself “I got this!” Or “I can learn from this?”
The glass is half full! Seize the moment with sure feet, a smile and a brave heart 💗
•
Yoga cultivates thinking the opposite when negative thoughts abound and hold us down.
•
Empathy for hostility. Courage for fear. Action for inaction. What else do we struggle with?
•
It’s all but an idea until we try and put it into practice.
