Well, Texas beachgoers apparently needed one more thing to worry about this summer. 🌊😬

People visiting the Galveston area are warning about so-called “sea lice” in Gulf waters. Despite the name, they’re not actually lice. The itchy culprit is typically microscopic larvae from stinging marine animals such as jellyfish.

The tiny critters can get trapped underneath swimsuits, where their stinging cells can cause an intensely itchy rash known as seabather’s eruption. Because they’re so small, you may never even see what got you.

Reports around Galveston have been making the rounds after beachgoers shared some pretty unpleasant experiences, although plenty of longtime visitors say they’ve never encountered them at all. Their presence can also vary depending on currents and conditions.

If you do end up with the rash, antihistamines, hydrocortisone cream and cold compresses can help with mild symptoms, and changing out of your swimsuit and washing it thoroughly is recommended.
