DAY 3: My 2020 vision is to see Utah ratify the Equal Rights Amendment!

Utah had such an auspicious start with women's rights. When crafting the ERA in 1923, Suffragist Alice Paul used language from Utah's own State Constitution to draft those 24 words that will give women legal protection under the U. S. Constitution. Those pioneer women had moxy! Why do we need to ratify the ERA? Because each state can decide how they will protect and enforce current law and each state is inconsistent in doing so. Respectful treatment of women is inconsistent state to state. The ERA single-handedly fixes this unequal treatment. Utah can set the example for the nation!

DAY 2: My 2020 vision is to see Utah ratify the Equal Rights Amendment!
Some say we don’t need the ERA, because women already have some protections in the 14th Amendment. The 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868, after the Civil War, to deal with race discrimination. In referring to the electorate, it added the word "male" to the Constitution for the first time. The Supreme Court has ruled that the 14th Amendment fully protects against discrimination on the basis of race, religion, and national origin - yet gives less protection for s*x discrimination.
Supreme Court Justice Scalia pointed out, the 14th Amendment was not meant to include women or protect against s*xual discrimination. With the Court likely to move further to the right, women may soon lose even the lesser level of protection they now have under the 14th Amendment. In 2020, it is more obvious than ever that women need stronger protection against s*xual discrimination. We need to be protected in the U.S. Constitution.

DAY 1: My 2020 vision is to see Utah ratify the Equal Rights Amendment! My reason for supporting the ERA is that my daughters could have fewer rights than I enjoy, as I watch laws meant to protect them get watered down and walked back. The Violence Against Women Act was not funded and not renewed by Congress this year. Utah has higher domestic violence than exists across the nation — 1 in 3 Utah women experience domestic violence vs. 1 in 4 nationwide. Unacceptable. My daughters will not be fully protected until the ERA is ratified and women are legally protected in the U.S. Constitution. What’s your reason? Share your “why” in the comments and consider sharing on your page. We get nowhere if we don’t invite conversation on this issue. For the New Year I’ll post more information every day in January. It’s time to understand what the ERA is truly about.
