My #1 asked question from the newborn day I did on my stories: “when can I begin a schedule?”.

⛅️ For the first three weeks of your baby’s life I say go with the flow the best you can. After that you can casually begin implementing a schedule.

⛅️ Schedules and routines are designed to help newborn parents have a reference, not cause stress over being “off” the schedule. Newborns are unpredictable.

⛅️ Schedules can help you know what your baby will need next when they’re fussing. It can help you ensure your baby is getting enough sleep, when their next nap should be and when their bedtime should be. It helps to keep feeding on track as well.

The witching hour can be so devastating for many families, but there are things we can do to minimize or eliminate it!

⛅️ Being aware of your newborn’s temperament and staying on top of their daytime sleep can really help you during the witching hour.

Have you experienced the witching hour? What are some things that helped? What questions do you still have about the witching hour?

Is your baby ready to drop a nap? It can be tricky to figure out if your baby is really ready to drop a nap or if it's just a regression. 😜

The dreaded early morning wake up!! 😵‍💫

First thing you'll notice on this post is how to tell if you have an early riser on your hands or simply an early bird. Early birds are children who wake early but are happy, well rested and have gotten a full night's sleep. Usually one of their parents is also a morning person so this shouldn't be too surprising! ☀️

Once you determine you're dealing with an early riser, here is a checklist to go through as the potential cause of your child's early mornings.

⛅️ Bedtime is too late
⛅️ Too much daytime sleep
⛅️ Laid down too sleepy at bedtime
⛅️ How you respond to the wake up
⛅️ Their waking with the sunlight
⛅️ Hunger

There can be so many other causes for early morning wake ups, including being cold in the early morning hours or being overtired from not enough daytime sleep, especially if your child is dropping a nap but bedtime is too late.

Comment any questions you have about early morning wake ups below or book a free call with me via the link in my bio!

Save this post for later so you always know how much sleep your child needs! ⛅️

Knowing how much sleep your child needs in a 24 hour period is a game changer so you can manage your expectations and set goals for sleep. Tweaks in a schedule can help lengthen cat naps, stop early morning wake ups, make bedtime easier and create longer stretches of sleep overnight.

What are you struggling with the most right now? Meeting daytime sleep goals or getting good stretches overnight?

This is for those of you who are suddenly experiencing more wake ups overnight! 😵‍💫😴

If things have been going great but suddenly went south or things have never been perfect but are suddenly worse, see if there’s any reasons listed on this post that could be causing your baby’s sleep problems!

How often does your baby usually get up during the night? Have they always been that way or has it gotten better or worse recently?!

Have you tried to sleep train before and it didn't work? To me, sleep training is bigger than just the technique, there's so much more that goes into it than that!

⛅️ I want you to set the stage for your baby to be successful! Sleep training can be rough, we want to make sure we do everything we can to make it as easy as possible for your little one.

⛅️ Make sure you're giving baby enough time! When your baby is crying, 5 minutes can feel like ETERNITY! It's your body's natural reaction to respond to your baby's cries. But sometimes we intervene too soon and never give baby enough space to figure it out.

⛅️ Being inconsistent. Need I say more? If you're constantly changing the rules, how is your baby supposed to catch on? This can drag out sleep training way longer than necessary!

⛅️ I want you to pick the technique that your baby is going to respond to best. We want to work with them, not against them! If you feel like your baby needs more support, choose an in room technique or if you're bothering them- give them some space!

My sleep classes for 4 months + can get you going to make sure sleep training goes as smoothly as possible! And when you experience bumps along the way, the class comes with a free 15 minute call to troubleshoot directly with me. 😊

Knowing if your baby is over or under tired is really tricky because the same sorts of sleep problems arise in both cases. 😵‍💫

Your baby's attitude can be a huge clue to which way they're actually leaning! If you need help figuring out if your baby is over or under tired, or if you know but don't know what to do next, go ahead and book a call with me so I can help you!
