My tips help blended families at Christmas, but I get backlash 12/22/2023

I was interviewed by The U.S. Sun for an article. The interviewer came across my TikTok page and people were debating on how to handle the holidays at Christmas. (Seems like every topic regarding stepfamilies is a controversial topic on Tiktok 🀣πŸ€ͺ…)

Give it a read and do me a favor and share with someone who is in a blended family. ❀️

My tips help blended families at Christmas, but I get backlash THE holidays can feel chaotic for most families, especially blended ones. Whether you’re shuttling your children between houses or arranging for Santa to come a day early, it can be a trying …

Have you seen this in your family or with someone you know? What was the result/effect of it?

A couple days ago I saw a thread about vacationing with an ex partner in a blended family. I was curious to see what other people said about it...

I was a little surprised to see the vast answers! Some families were all about taking vacations together. Some families would never dream of it. Some families had both depending on which ex partner they were talking about.

The thing is... nobody was RIGHT. Nobody was WRONG.

There is no one right answer for every situation.

Sometimes we just want blanket answers that cover everything.

"This is the best way to do Christmas in a blended family"
"This is the only way to have a co-parenting relationship"
"Do this one thing and it will solve all your problems"

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way.

Most of the time we have opinions that lean one way or another based off our personal experiences.

I have worked with many clients and NONE of them had the exact same circumstances.

The "best" thing for each family is different.

And sometimes the "best" option for our family can change with time!

Let's stop judging each other.

Stop judging ourselves.

Not every situation is the same--and it actually makes life more beautiful.

Let's dive into a topic that's often not the most exciting but is undeniably vital for blended families!

Q: Are there any legal or financial considerations I should be aware of in a blended family?

A: Yes! Consult with legal and financial pros to get the lowdown on YOUR unique situation.

They can help you with:

Legal Obligations: Make sure you're in the know about any legal duties, rights, and responsibilities specific to your family setup. Every family is different, so understanding where you stand legally is crucial.

Financial Implications: Money matters! Discuss your financial arrangements and expectations. This can include things like sharing expenses, child support, saving for kids' education, medical bills, or even planning your estate.

Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all solution. The key is getting tailored advice for your family's peace of mind.

Can we talk real for a minute?

Not all kids are going to be jumping up and down with excitement about that fact that you're blending your families together.

Sometimes they are hesitant.

Sometimes they experience a loyalty bind.

Sometimes they don't get along well with their step siblings.

Sometimes they have fears about this new stepparent coming in to their life.

Sometimes they wish they could go back to the way things used to be...

Those are all normal responses. Remind yourself that nothing has gone wrong here.

The children will have their own experience, but if you can be that support for them without pressuring, judging, or shaming them they can work through it at their own pace.

Be a SAFE space for them to express their feeling. Validate their experience (because this is tricky for everyone in the family!).

Focus on creating positive experiences and allow things to happen at the pace that they happen.

You got this!

Ever felt like life's tugging you in all directions?

We've been there too...

But then I remember, it's during those challenging moments that the strongest couples emerge. That's when you actually grow closer and create that partnership you dream about.

It's not about having a perfect, trouble-free journey (that's not realistic). It's about having a love and commitment that endures even when the path gets rocky.

Remember, you're not alone!

TOGETHER, you can conquer any challenge, navigate any twist, and come out even stronger on the other side.

Your blended family journey is a testament to your resilience and the power of your love.

Tag someone who could use this reminder.
