At the same time, 7,000 workers will be forcibly reassigned into newly created AI-focused teams. An additional 6,000 open positions have been eliminated entirely.

The math behind the cuts is brutal. Meta is redirecting capital from human salaries to compute infrastructure, with 2026 AI capital expenditures projected between $125 billion and $145 billion, nearly double last year's spending. Chief Financial Officer Susan Li admitted to investors that the company "doesn't really know" what its optimal headcount looks like in an AI-driven future. Employees being transferred into teams like Applied AI Engineering and the Agent Transformation Accelerator are being told they will help build AI agents designed to automate tasks currently performed by human workers. The irony is not lost on anyone. Workers are being asked to train the systems that may eventually replace them.
