Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States, celebrated on the first Monday of September to honor the achievements, contributions, and strength of American workers.

The first Labor Day celebration took place on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, organized in accordance with plans developed by the Central Labor Union. The organization held its second Labor Day celebration just one year later, on September 5, 1883.

By 1894, an additional 23 states had adopted the holiday. On June 28 of that year, President Grover Cleveland signed legislation establishing the first Monday in September as a national holiday.

Washingtonville is a diverse community, made up of residents who commute to work, those employed locally, and many others who contribute their time, talents, and hard work to making our community stronger. Today, we recognize and appreciate the contributions of every worker who helps make Washingtonville a wonderful place to live.

We wish everyone a very happy Labor Day—and it seems the weather gods are celebrating right along with us this year! 🇺🇸

The three women of Washingtonville… if these walls could talk!

Growing up in “the Ville,” you couldn’t help but notice the grandeur of these three beautiful homes. I often imagine that in their heyday, they must have been absolutely stunning. But, as happens with all beauties, time eventually takes its toll.

I have to give credit to the owners of 60 East Main, who have worked hard to keep their property clean, festive, and filled with life—and we thank you for that.

I often dream about how lovely all three of these homes could be again, and the impact they could have on our community if they were restored to their very best selves. I would love to learn more about their history, the families who once called them home, and what hopes may exist for their future.

Until then, I’ll continue holding on to the hope that someday, all will receive the love and care they deserve and, as all women wish, return to looking their very best.
