Why the World Thinks Voodoo Is Black Magic (Part 3)
Yes, We Must Know Black Magic to Defeat It.

Now, let’s get honest. In Voodoo Spiritism, we study black magic. We learn how curses are formed. We learn how dark spirits enter the home, the body, the aura. Because if we don’t understand the enemy, how can we protect against it?

You cannot heal what you refuse to face. You cannot break a hex if you don’t understand how it was cast.

I have studied the dark. I have seen what it does. I have stood at gravesites where unholy spirits had been loosed. I’ve removed black candles from under beds, buried foul items in salt and stone, untied knots around people’s lives.

And I’ve done it not to mimic the power—but to overcome it.

There was a particular alchemy to it: the needle's first contact with vinyl, that brief static hiss before the music emerged, as though the record had to clear its throat before it could speak. Record stores were their own kind of sanctuary back then, aisles of sleeves waiting to be discovered by hand.

I was looking in the classical section for my interest in classical music when I stumbled onto Screamin' Jay Hawkins — I Put a Spell on You — and something in me reoriented. The album's imagery has never left me: Hawkins in full voodoo regalia, equal parts showman and shaman. That discovery became a doorway. From Hawkins I found Iggy Pop's raw, unguarded physicality, and from Iggy, inevitably, David Bowie — each of them understanding something the others knew instinctively, that sound and image are not separate acts but a single gesture.

Later, in California, I lived inside Victorian houses with high ceilings and old wooden floors, listening to those same records on an antique turntable in the cool of the evening, immersed in a music scene that felt, then, genuinely new. I remember the first time a friend brought me into a recording studio — analog tape, a real mixing board, live microphones catching the take as it happened. We carried that recording to a small label in Oakland, Alternative Tentacles, and watched it pressed into fresh vinyl. Their bat insignia burned itself into my memory the way Hawkins's imagery had years before.

As for why Vodou imagery carries such darkness — I think it's because certain subcultures inherit archetypes powerful enough to speak across generations without translation. We are one current beneath many surfaces; we make peace with what's internal rather than exiling it. These are communities built on intellect and on a deep reverence for the shadow — skulls, bats, serpents, set always among flowers, herbs, and libations, because beauty and decay were never meant to be separated.

Picture a piano, plum velvet cascading from its frame, dried lilies and chrysanthemums and poppies leaning over fresh fruit and bone — a still life in the old vanitas tradition, where the ripeness and the rot occupy the same frame on purpose. A conjuring, addressed to the music of time itself.

Question: Why do we see skulls and things that are Dark on the alter of a Vodou work?

Answer: It is not that we are sitting around casting spells.

Things work very different then that for us.

See, we do not cast spells, we are a conduit of ancient forces of nature. We can not simply cast them.

We make a request and if this ancient force says so, than it is so!

We make a request and if pressure falls upon someone then they have done much wrong.

They have been out of step with nature!

And so that’s how the spirit approaches, to bring balance to earth.

Interesting how ALL of the images of this nature are in the Capitalistic nations.

Capitalism demonizes personal power. There is no more powerful person than someone who can conjure nature.

You think these fires, waters and winds are just happening. People think that they created these weathers. They did not. A human can not, and will not kill nature. She is wise and old and has been through thousands of opportunities humans have had at loving earth.

These images are not Vodou images, they are a mirror of capitalists own fears.

They lie to you, see that home, and baby, and job, and food will never be. It is an illusion of safety.

How can you ever feel safe if you are not a Vodou, if you are disconnected with Earth.

The only way they can sell you this safety is to remove the great Mother. Demonize her and bring a dark cloak over her beautiful and terrifying face.

She is the faceless spirit and what you see in her is inside of you.

Basically that it is.
