To my amazing clients,

Thank you so much for your trust, your openness, your hard work, and your vulnerability this year.

One of my absolute favorite things is to watch your babies stare lovingly at you, and you with them. Despite feeding challenges, getting to witness the metamorphosis of wonderful people into tender and loving parents is such an honor.

This has been my busiest year yet thanks to your kind words and referrals to friends and family. I am so grateful to you for making my dreams come true and getting to spend everyday empowering families and helping babies eat. Happy New Year ❤️

Ouch! Nothing like trying to get your baby to latch and then they kinda suck up your ni**le like a straw! Here are my best tips for getting that wide open gape that looks and feels good!

1) Get into position! Have you ever tried eating a sandwich when turning your head to the side? Your baby won’t want to either- try turning their body toward you so their ear, shoulder, and hips are in a straight line.

2) Create space! It’s hard to open your mouth wide when your chin is tucked down to your chest- try it and see what I mean. Holding your baby in a position where their nose is across from your ni**le will allow them to tilt their head back and open even wider.

3) Use those reflexes! Babies have this wonderful reflex called the rooting reflex- they try to latch onto anything that touches their cheek or lips -it why they are always trying to latch onto their hands! When you touch their upper lip/nose with your ni**le- they will open wide to root. It can be lightening fast, but this is where your want to bring your baby “chin-in” quickly; don’t place your ni**le in their mouth. It feels more natural to feed yourself than for someone else to feed you.

As a part of bringing your baby on, the ni**le needs to go into the upper part of your baby’s mouth where the hard and soft palate meet. When your ni**le goes straight into their mouth, it can rest on their tongue and create a shallow latch where they are lashing your ni**le or they just pull off and cry.

Try these tips and see if they help you get a more comfortable latch. If you are still having trouble, reach out to me and I can help!

In short, there are so many right ways for you and your baby.

From a latching standpoint, If the latch feels comfortable, your ni**les are round afterward, your breasts soften with each feeding session, and your baby is satisfied after feeding and having plenty of wet and dirty diapers- you’re doing it right!

If you are combining bottle and breast and happy with your schedule of pumping, do hands on pumping, have a well fitting fl**ge, and using paced feeds- you are doing it right!

From a milk production perspective, if an exclusively breastfed baby is gaining weight well and on track with their growth curve, milk production is where it needs to be.

If you are combo feeding breastmilk and formula and feel confident with your feeding plan and balancing both- then you are doing it right!

There’s so much we can doubt about the process of making milk! You are probably doing a better job than you think you are- and if you have questions, reach out and ask for help!

It’s true, breastfed infants take about 19-32 ounces of milk, or an average of 25 oz every 24 hours from month 1-6. So if you are pumping and worried about volume, your infant is not going to need larger and larger bottles to keep growing well. What a relief!

There are many reasons you might want to pump, hand express breast milk, or feed your baby pumped breast milk. Having expressed breast milk can allow your baby to drink your breast milk from a bottle.

When to Start Pumping
If you are planning to return to work or school or will be away from your baby for other reasons, you may want to start pumping a few weeks beforehand. This will give you the chance to practice pumping and will give your baby time to get used to feeding from a bottle.

How Often to Pump
When away from your baby or if you exclusively pump your milk, try to pump as often as your baby is drinking breast milk. This will help remind your body to keep making the amount of milk your baby needs.

How Much to Pump
Did You Know?
Hand expression is one way to express milk if your breasts are feeling extra full, if you do not have access to a manual or electric breast pump, if you are unexpectedly separated from your baby, or if you want to make more milk. It is good for all mothers to know how to do this.

To hand express, you use your hand to massage and compress your breast to remove milk. While it takes practice, skill, and coordination, it gets easier over time.
Pumping as often as your baby normally drinks breast milk should help your body make about the amount of milk your baby needs. This amount may differ from baby to baby and can change as babies grow. If you find that you are not able to pump as much milk as your baby wants to eat while you are away, you may want to consider adding another pumping session to increase your milk supply.

Great news for families continuing to breast/chestfeed their toddlers!

The American Academy of Pediatrics has updated their guidance on breastfeeding to be more in line with the World Health Organization (WHO) guidance. Great news for public health and families!

If you talk to any parent, they might tell you that breastfeeding is one of the hardest things they have ever done. Not many things in our lives can compare to taking care of a tiny human especially if you grew and birthed that baby!

Having support for your breast/chestfeeding journey can make all the difference between challenges that seem too great and a workable plan that gives your tools and confidence.

But the real confidence comes from you. ❤️
