🎙️💥 REAL TALK FOR ADULT MUSIC LEARNERS: PART 15

Adult learners often overlook the small wins. We tend to take progress seriously.

We expect big, noticeable breakthroughs and dismiss the smaller moments that actually make up most of the journey.

But learning music isn’t one major leap. It’s dozens of quiet improvements stacked over time.

And with how full and busy life can be, showing up and making any progress is something worth celebrating even more.

đź’ˇ HERE'S MY TIP:

Take time to acknowledge and appreciate the progress you’ve made, even if it’s just feeling more comfortable with your instrument.

Reflection and gratitude for small victories are essential. They help you see how far you’ve come and keep you moving forward.

After all, a small victory is still a victory.

🎙️💥 REAL TALK FOR ADULT MUSIC LEARNERS: PART 14

Learning music as an adult can feel isolating.

Because you’re learning one-on-one and not as a typical young beginner, it can feel isolating.

You’re not the only one on this path. Many people start learning music later in life, even if it’s not always visible.

They’re practicing in their own spaces, at their own pace, just like you. What feels isolating is often more shared than it seems.

đź’ˇ HERE'S MY TIP:

Seek out other adult learners, whether in your teacher’s studio or through online communities and forums. Even a few shared conversations can make the experience feel more connected.

Hearing how others navigate similar challenges can be both motivating and reassuring. It’s a simple way to turn a solitary process into a shared one.

There’s power in a supportive community.

🎙️💥 REAL TALK FOR ADULT MUSIC LEARNERS: PART 13

What’s the difference, you may ask?

Music that drills you is functional and practice oriented.
Music you enjoy is recreational and has emotional connection to it.

Adult learners often feel like they have to “follow the curriculum” and play only what they’re told (which is usually drill-oriented).

The catch is, if you’re not passionate about the music you’re learning, it’s very likely you’ll loose motivation along the way.

Growth and joy CAN coexist.

đź’ˇ HERE'S MY TIP:

Bring your own interests to the table.

Want to learn a song you love? Speak up!

Most of the time, this actually helps your teacher choose music that fits both your current skill level and your personal taste.

When it’s music you love, practice becomes less of a chore.

🎙️💥 REAL TALK FOR ADULT MUSIC LEARNERS: PART 12

Your instructor is your partner in this journey. Don’t go through it alone!

Learning music as an adult can be tough at times, and you might hit moments where you feel stuck, frustrated, or unsure of your progress.

Your instructor is a music professional designed to guide you through these moments, giving you perspective and encouragement.

đź’ˇ HERE'S MY TIP:

Don’t hesitate to reach out when you’re struggling or need clarification.

Whether it’s about a difficult concept, adjusting your practice routine, or just getting encouragement, your teacher is there to support you.

Open communication keeps you on track and helps your teacher tailor lessons to your needs.

🎙️💥 REAL TALK FOR ADULT MUSIC LEARNERS: PART 11

As a parent, carving out time for yourself can feel impossible. You’re constantly juggling the needs of your family.

But the truth is, you deserve to have time for yourself. And music lessons can be your escape, your time to focus on something just for you

đź’ˇ HERE'S MY TIP:

Set aside dedicated time each week for practice, just like you would with any other appointment.

It’s important to prioritize your passion, even if it’s only for 20 minutes a day. You’ll feel more fulfilled and energized afterwards.

Remember, taking care of yourself is the first step in being able to care for others.

🎙️💥 REAL TALK FOR ADULT MUSIC LEARNERS: PART 10

Life will always be busy, but the struggle with time isn’t forever.

At the start, fitting lessons and practice into your schedule might feel like a huge challenge.

But as you develop a routine and stick with it, you’ll start finding natural pockets of time that work for you.

đź’ˇ HERE'S MY TIP:

Don’t stress about having a perfect schedule right off the bat.

Start by finding small, consistent windows in your day and build your routine from there.

Eventually, you’ll carve out a rhythm that works for you.

Remember, schedules are meant to help, not hinder. Create them with your lifestyle in mind.

🎙️💥 REAL TALK FOR ADULT MUSIC LEARNERS: PART 9

Adult learners often struggle with wanting to be “perfect” from the start.

While high standards can drive success, perfectionism can often cause more harm than good.

As an adult music student, it is normal to feel self-conscious or frustrated because you think you should be better immediately.

But the truth is that being a beginner is an uncomfortable yet necessary, temporary phase of vulnerability, awkwardness, and mistakes that ultimately builds competence.

đź’ˇ HERE'S MY TIP:

Give yourself permission to be a beginner.

Celebrate the small wins, like learning a new chord or playing a full song for the first time.

At the end of the day, this is your journey, and there’s no rush.

Remember, the expert in anything was once a beginner.

🎙️💥 REAL TALK FOR ADULT MUSIC LEARNERS: PART 8

The musicians you admire aren’t gifted. They are consistent.

There is a BIG difference between the two.

What looks like talent is usually skill built through:
- strong fundamentals
- years of repetition
- intentional investment in growth

Music isn’t reserved for the “naturally gifted.”

Music is for those willing to build it through time, effort, and intention.

đź’ˇ HERE'S MY TIP:

Stop asking, “Am I talented?” Instead, start asking, “Am I consistent?”

Because consistency beats talent every. single. time.

Remember, skill is built, not born.

🎙️💥 REAL TALK FOR ADULT MUSIC LEARNERS: PART 7

It’s so easy to look at someone else and think: “They’re so much better than me.”

But this mentality only pulls your focus away from yourself and destroys your momentum.

What you don’t see about those you’re comparing yourself to is:

How many years they’ve been playing
How many practice sessions they pushed through
How many mistakes they made along the way

You’re comparing your chapter 1 to someone else’s chapter 10 and that’s an unfair comparison.

đź’ˇ HERE'S MY TIP:

Remind yourself that the only useful comparison is you vs you.

Are you better than you were a month ago? Three months ago? That’s what matters.

Stay in your lane. You are on your own timeline.

Remember, comparison steals joy, while focus builds skill.
