Minnesotans love moose! But sadly, this ultimate ungulate is in trouble in our state. Minnesota’s northwestern moose population has practically disappeared, and we’ve lost half the northeastern population in the last decade. Minnesota Zoo conservation scientists and veterinary staff have joined researchers across the state to understand the moose decline and find science-based solutions to help wild moose. Next month, for the third time, researchers will try to put tracking collars on about 50 newborn calves in one of the most comprehensive studies ever conducted to find out why moose are in such perilous decline in Minnesota. But the calves’ mothers have abandoned those babies at painfully high rates.
