Hello Rock Creek,

For families planning to make payments this evening at the High School Back to School Night, please note that we will need a separate check for each of the following:

Enrollment by school. (High School Lobby)

Money deposited into a student's lunch account. (High School Lobby)

Activity passes. (Located outside of the High School Gymnasium)

If your student plans to bring their phone into the school, per enrollment, $10 for the case. (HS Commons)

Should you wish to pay for anything with cash, please plan to bring exact change.

Again, doors will open to the High School at 5:00 pm this evening at both the Activity Entrance and at the South Office Entrance. Food will be available in the North East parking lot, provided by the Rock Creek PTO programs.

Last, a High School and Middle School Activities meeting will take place in the HS Gymnasium starting at 5:45 pm.

Dear Rock Creek High School Families,

Last week, we shared information regarding HB 2299, which is the personal device ban. Additionally, information was shared regarding Rock Creek High School's backpack procedures. Since then, we have received valuable feedback from RCHS staff, students, families, and community members. After further discussion regarding logistics, the cost to our families, and our commitment to remaining in compliance with the new law, we have decided to modify our plans for the upcoming school year.

Rock Creek High School students will be permitted to carry backpacks throughout the school day as long as they follow the expectations established by the school.

The expectations regarding the personal electronic device ban remain unchanged. State law requires that personal electronic devices remain inaccessible to students from the first bell to the final bell each school day. If a student chooses to bring a personal electronic device to school, they must purchase a school-approved locking storage container after enrollment. The locking storage container will become the student's property and may be reused in future school years. The cost for the students first locking storage container will be $10. If students elect not to bring a personal electronic devices into the building, they are not required to purchase a locking storage container.

Personal electronic devices include but are not limited to: cell phones, tablets, smart watches, smart glasses, and wireless earbuds.
Personal devices locked in their locking storage container must be stored in assigned lockers. While students may carry their backpacks from class to class, backpacks may not be used to store personal electronic devices during the school day. Any student found in possession of a personal electronic device during the school day will lose the privilege of carrying a backpack. When this privilege is revoked, the student's backpack must be checked into the office each morning and picked up at the end of the school day.

Because the HB 2299 electronic device policy requires phones to remain inaccessible to students from bell to bell, backpack expectations and consequences are directly tied to the consistent implementation of the school's device ban.
Students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or Section 504 Plan that includes the use of an approved electronic device as an accommodation or service will be permitted to use that device in accordance with the provisions of their plan.

The following consequences will apply to violations of the personal electronic device policy:

First Violation
- Personal electronic devices are confiscated and must be picked up by a parent or guardian.
- Backpack/bag must be checked into the office each morning for 10 school days. Students may bring the backpack to and from school but may not carry it during the school day.
- Student must purchase a locking storage container before regaining the privilege of bringing a personal electronic device into the school, or continue to check the device into the office in lieu of purchase.

Second Violation
- Personal electronic devices are confiscated and must be picked up by a parent or guardian.
- One-half day of In-School Suspension (ISS).
- Personal devices and backpack/bag must be checked into the office each morning for 20 school days. Students may bring both items to and from school but may not have them during the school day.

Third Violation
- Personal electronic devices are confiscated and must be picked up by a parent or guardian.
- One-half day of In-School Suspension (ISS).
- Student will report to the office each morning to check in their personal electronic device and backpack/bag until privileges are restored by the school administration.

Students who are assigned office check-in procedures as a result of a policy violation will be permitted to bring their backpack into the building each morning to place their school materials in their locker before checking their backpack and personal electronic device into the office. At the end of the school day, students will be provided adequate time to retrieve their belongings so they can board their bus or attend after-school activities without issue.

The student handbook will be updated to reflect these changes. Rock Creek High School will continue working alongside our faculty, staff, students, and Student Council to evaluate these procedures and make adjustments as needed.

Dear Rock Creek Middle School and Rock Creek High School Families,

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we want to share information regarding HB 2299 and our district’s implementation of a bell-to-bell personal electronic device ban during the school day. This bill requires that all Kansas public schools prohibit student access to personal devices from bell to bell. In order to do this, the devices must be turned off and securely stored away from students during the school day, including passing periods and lunch. Personal devices include but are not limited to: cell phone, smart watch, earbuds/headphones, personal tablets/computers, meta glasses, etc.

The best option is for students to leave their personal electronic devices at home or in their vehicle (or sibling’s vehicle for middle school students), where they are inaccessible during the school day.

If a device cannot be left at home or in a vehicle (or sibling’s vehicle for middle school students) a locking storage container must be purchased from the school following enrollment. The device must remain powered off and secured in the container and the assigned student locker from the first bell until the final bell each school day.

To ensure consistent implementation, the following consequences will apply for violations:

1st violation: Device is taken to the office and must be picked up by a parent or guardian.

2nd violation: Device is taken to the office, must be picked up by a parent or guardian, and the student will receive a half-day of ISS.

3rd violation: Device is taken to the office, must be picked up by a parent or guardian, the student will receive a half-day of ISS, and the student will report to the office each morning to turn in their phone for a period of time determined by school administration.

Students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan that includes the use of an approved electronic device as an accommodation or service will be permitted to use that device in accordance with the provisions of their plan.

Additionally, all high school students will be required to use their assigned locker throughout the school day. Backpacks and other large personal bags may not be carried during the school day and must be stored in the student’s assigned locker.
