Never underestimate the importance of play! We develop symbolic thinking first through our playful interactions with the people and objects in our environment. Think about it, if language is a representation of our ideas through the shared symbol of words and if words are represented by the shared symbols of speech or text, then it has to be abundantly clear that one, directly supports the other. Being able to create a visual conceptualization (again a symbol built through sensory play and experiencing the world) of what one is reading or having read to them, is the basis for reading comprehension. Play precedes and develops alongside of literacy!
