Did you know ... in 1920, a Civil Engineer named Joseph Park Babcock, was sent by Standard Oil to Suzhou, China. He and his wife enjoyed playing the Maque so much, he decided introduce it to America. He created a simplified version of the game, trademarked the name "Mah-Jongg", and wrote a book, Rules of Mah-Jongg. As popularity for the game intensified, other entrepreneurs, authors, and companies made their own sets and books. Since they could not sue the name “mah-jongg”, they came up with other names, “Ma Chong”, “Pung Chow”, even “The Game of a Thousand Intelligences”. Eventually it became common to refer to the game by the generic name “mahjong” (dropping the hyphen and double G).
According the website www.sloperama.com, the Chinese have recently changed the way the game's name is written, from 麻雀 "mah que" to 麻将 "mah jiang". It's not clear why the change was made, but [his guess] is that it was an attempt to find a more impressive-sounding way to write the English word "mahjong".

Did you know ... the one of the original names for the game of Mahjong was "Mah que", which literally translates to "sparrow"? When tiles were shuffled, especially bone and bamboo tiles, it sounded like sparrows squabbling over scattered food crumbs.
