If we want students to succeed on high-stakes reading assessments, they need meaningful reading experiences. That means reading not only anthologies, but also novels and short stories—and not just one book a year, but several throughout the year.

TeacherUnits.com is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting literacy and student achievement.

At TeacherUnits.com by EdProDesign, a non-profit organization, we believe literacy grows through real engagement with text — page by page, pencil in hand, thinking in real time.

As we near the end of the school year, many of our students have participated in state testing across our country. One of the requisite skills for proficiency is the ability to persevere with grade level text, which is a cornerstone of our high stakes, state assessments.

Daily reading with adopted text or with supplemental reading material like the short story and novel units at TeacherUnits.com, are essential for engaging reading muscles and building that necessary comprehension skills and reading stamina.

Units on TeacherUnits.com

-Ask students to do the reading and the thinking (No one is going to read the state test reading passages to them!)

-Instruct on essential standards and competencies.

-Guide teachers in effective scaffolding and structures to make text accessible and comprehensible for all students.

-Assess growth and proficiency with pre- and post-tests, comprehension quizzes, and rigorous outcomes.

-Honors the hard work that teachers put into designing and delivering quality first instruction by creating customizable, ready-to-teach units.

We hope you and your students have had an enjoyable year of learning together.

I recently heard a comment noting that sentence frames were being used and suggesting this reflected a shift toward Common Core. I wanted to offer a bit of clarification, as sentence frames are not specific to Common Core. They are a widely used instructional strategy that supports students in connecting language with content.

When thoughtfully implemented, sentence frames can align with the cognitive demands of a unit’s learning goals and provide scaffolding that helps students develop and express their thinking. Making these supports available can be especially helpful, while still allowing flexibility for students who are ready to articulate their ideas independently.

It is always encouraging to see students express their thinking at any level, and continued modeling of academic language can further support literacy development across all learners.

TeacherUnits.com is a nonprofit literacy organization built to reverse the decline in sustained reading and literary comprehension. We start from a simple but powerful belief: when teachers are provided with high-quality, standards-aligned full-text curriculum and meaningful professional development, they can transform how students experience reading, while still maintaining flexibility to adapt materials to their students’ needs. And because reading proficiency is deeply tied to socioeconomic mobility, this work is not just educational, but fundamentally tied to opportunity and equity.

Something to think about: AI is a statistical tool rather than a sentient one, which makes it vulnerable to systematic errors—especially in high-stakes environments where the consequences can be significant. Given this, it is worth asking why educators would rely on AI for instructional design rather than prioritizing quality-first instruction and intentional teaching that clearly connect rigorous unit outcomes to the daily instruction needed to meet the diverse needs of all students.

For students to become competent, engaged citizens, they must be able to read, comprehend, and respond to grade-level texts. Achieving this requires sustained, active reading—not merely listening to the teacher or participating in read-alouds, but receiving explicit instruction that equips them to engage with and grapple independently with complex texts.

Supporting Our Special Needs Students in a General ELA Class

Research shows that students benefit when information is presented using multiple formats—such as audio, visuals, graphic organizers, anchor charts, and videos—so all learners can access and understand the content in ways that suit their needs (UDL).
Our units intentionally incorporate these strategies. They are designed to complement and strengthen teachers’ existing instruction while inviting educators to apply their own expertise, strategies, and instructional strengths.
As a nonprofit organization, TeacherUnits.com gives English teachers the time they need, the control they want, and students the rigor they deserve.
