Händel composed several chamber sonatas during his time in Italy and England, including this sonata, which was first published in London. The influences of those audiences, combining lyricism, dance, and structural balance, appealed to both amateur and professional performers. This sonata was even adapted into other pieces such as his Organ Concerto in F Major, HWV 293, as well as by others in popular media.

This pair of movements from this recorder sonata, adapted for flute, provides a lovely opportunity for Baroque contrast: one movement with dramatic & emotional range, and singing phrasing, while the other requires buoyant liveliness and clear articulation. Some liberties have been taken to adjust this particular edition from Voxman. Enjoy!

Even though Émile Pessard was a teacher to Maurice Ravel, Jacques Ibert, and other influential French composers, his music seems to have been lost in the noise today. One of his pieces was additionally misattributed to Debussy simply because Debussy was in possession of it. Much of his output was focused on opera, works for piano solo, and solo voice with piano, and this popular work for the flute actually comes from a set of character pieces titled "25 Pièces pour piano, Op. 20" (1878) by Émile Pessard, which was even arranged for the flute during his lifetime.

Andalouse is a great piece for working through melodic patterns, namely thirds and scales. Coupled with the A-B-A-B-A-C form, this produces a sizable piece for intermediate flutists while remaining in a very manageable setting. Enjoy!

An original co-founder of the Berliner Philharmoniker, Joachim Andersen was a Danish flutist, conductor, and composer best known for his extensive output of études. Scherzino comes from his 8 Performance Pieces for Flute and Piano, Op. 55, first published in 1894. Interestingly, Andersen played on flutes predating Böhm's innovations (although those flutes were becoming more widespread), so it's fascinating to note that these études were not originally written for the system we use today.

Scherzino is excellent for high rhythmic accuracy, bouncy articulation, and, of course, a playful character. Its playfulness is also enhanced by the technical work required of the flutist: lots of runs and not always convenient places to breathe! This is contrasted by a beautiful middle section, which requires a sense of long phrases. Enjoy!
