This is an important topic for women to know and for midwives to consider...

After a deep study in breech birth in my classes at IndieBirth, I have found that our culture has taken a backwards turn, leaving women in the lurch. A small flawed study out of Canada has literally caused the majority of providers across the land to refuse a woman with a breech baby the chance to birth her baby vaginally. OB's are no longer even trained in breech delivery and will only deliver them surgically. Licensed midwives are required by the state to transfer these clients to OBs or lose their license. These women, who have planned a homebirth suddenly find themselves thrown out from under their trusted midwife's care and into the hands of a stranger OB who informs them they MUST have a c-section if baby does not flip to head down position.
Suddenly, instead of resting and enjoying her last days of pregnancy, she is left looking for someone to do a version on the baby (which has it's own risks), spinning babies, daily exercises, and the worry of being suddenly labeled "high risk" in the last days of pregnancy, when she should be at peace, looking forward to meeting her baby.
When you begin to really look into it, breech babies sure do come fairly easily! This fantastic video is an example of how smoothly a breech baby can be born. https://player.vimeo.com/video/305098551?fbclid=IwAR0uQ2al1ItiseJt8Zj6kL528Rr-r2dmbTxjPWRlcHaKTVNfgXEMjXy5tTQ
Birth is risky. Life is risky. Nothing is risk free. The risks of breech delivery are not higher than the risk of birthing a head down baby. Regardless, Women deserve the right to choose a vaginal breech birth in the place she desires to birth! I am happy to support women who are facing this situation with resources and encouragement! Please contact me if you need someone to talk to about your breech baby.
