Launched in October in 2011 by Brian Fikes and Greg Howes in response to the City Of Sacramento legalizing backyard chickens. We offer one of a kind artisan themed coops, consultations, classes, books and supplies. We also offer premium organic feed from Modesto Milling.

Starting January 1, 2026, Switzerland plans to end the killing of chicks. 🐥
Bio Suisse has decided to stop the practice entirely, ensuring that male chicks are no longer killed. Conventional egg producers are also transitioning by using in-ovo s*xing, which allows the s*x of the embryo to be identified before hatching. Together, these steps phase out the killing of newly hatched chicks.
This marks an important step toward improved animal welfare in Swiss egg production.

''Time to REALLY fly the coop!'' The time has come for us to shutter our business. Since 2011 we have been a (hopefully!?!) reliable source for artisan coops, organic feed and education. We ceased coop sales during the pandemic and this last Spring saw our final ''The Art of Keeping Chickens'' class at Soil Born Farms. We picked up our final feed order at Modesto Milling earlier in the month. We have had a pretty good run all in all. It has been a total pleasure to have helped countless folks get started on keeping/maintaining their own flock and enjoying this wonderful hobby. Following below is a list of the incredible businesses, organizations and people that we were fortunate to have collaborated with or who have assisted us in many ways.
