As government buildings and private businesses around the world went red for World AIDS Day, Sacramento HIV/AIDS activists have been working to turn California's State Capitol dome red - only to be repeatedly declined by Assemblyman Ken Cooley. A simple flip of the switch could literally have helped save lives. Cooley's decision may have kept the dome dark this past December 1, but it brought light to the outrageous sigma and fear that lives on around HIV. Mayor Steinberg, and other local leaders and activists gathered on World AIDS Day, asking the Sacramento community to step up to help keep everyone healthy.
Sacramento is one of 40 HIV hotspots in the country and 1 in 7 don't know they are positive, so the virus continues to be spread.

The CDC said one in seven people are infected with HIV and don't know it.

Last year the rate of syphilis cases reached its highest since 1991 and the total number of cases hit its highest since 1948. HIV cases are also on the rise, up 16% last year.

NEW YORK (AP) — Sharply rising cases of some s*xually transmitted diseases — including a 26% rise in new syphilis infections reported last year — are prompting U.S. health officials to call for new prevention and treatment efforts.
