What happens when the things you used to define yourself are suddenly gone?
The job. The relationship. The success. The version of your life you thought you could count on.
In this episode of Genuine Life, Samantha Norman and I talk about what it means to find out who you are underneath all of it—and why some of the hardest seasons of our lives can force us to confront the questions we’ve been avoiding.
This is a conversation about identity, loss, faith, fear, leadership, and learning to stop building a life around who you think you’re supposed to be.
Who are you when everything falls apart?

Sacramento, I’m Coming Back… But 96°?! 🥵Heading to Sacramento to see friends after calling it home for so many years. First I have to record my shows, pack for 96° weather…and apparently find a bathing suit that didn’t “shrink.” ☀️🎙️And after nearly 20 years on The Fish, it’s going to feel very strange being back without it. ❤️

Many of us don't grow up thinking, "Something unhealthy happened." We grow up believing, "There must be something wrong with me." Those false beliefs can quietly shape our relationships, our choices, and the way we see ourselves for years.
In this video, I explore how emotional wounds often become false beliefs—and how God's truth begins to restore our identity. Healing starts when we stop accepting every thought as truth and begin asking whether it aligns with who God says we are.

We all look for acceptance somewhere. For Austin Rampt, it was addiction. For others, it might be success, approval, perfectionism, or people-pleasing. This conversation is about the deeper search beneath it all.

What does gaslighting actually do to a person?

Gaslighting isn't just someone lying to you. It's someone making you question your own reality. After a while, you stop trusting your memories...your feelings...your instincts...sometimes even yourself. And that's the real damage. You start wondering..."Maybe I am overreacting." Maybe I'm too sensitive." "Maybe I really am the problem." For a lot of us, that didn't start in adulthood. It started way back when we were kids. Maybe your feelings were dismissed. Maybe you were told what you felt wasn't true. Maybe keeping the peace felt safer than speaking up. And after hearing those messages long enough... you start believing them. Jesus said….the truth will set you free." Gaslighting does the exact opposite. It trains you to doubt the truth. Not just about the situation...but about yourself. You stop trusting what you saw. What you heard. What you felt. That's why people who've been gaslighted will apologize for things they didn't do...second-guess conversations...replay events over and over...and constantly ask other people, "Am I crazy?" They're not looking for attention. They're looking for reality. Healing begins when you no longer need someone else to tell you what you already know deep down is true.

This sentence from Austin Rampt’s book One Last Hit Book slayed me: “I recreated myself so many times that I didn’t even know who I was.”I think that’s true for far more people than we’d like to admit. This isn’t just a conversation about addiction. It’s about identity, approval, shame, healing, and what happens when we finally stop performing and start becoming who God created us to be. I can’t wait for you to hear it. Listen/watch here:

I was reading in psalms the other day this hit me. The Psalmist asks: "Keep me from lying to myself." First John talks about how our hearts can deceive us by condemning us. Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings. These vs address the human tendency to deceive ourselves. We can't heal what we can't see. Jesus said: "The truth will set you free." Yes, He was talking about theology, but God also reveals the hidden truths of our mind, soul, & emotions; bringing them to the surface so we can heal. Sometimes the person you're hiding from the most is yourself? For years, I could tell you what everyone else needed. But if you asked me: "What are you feeling?"
I could not have told you. A lot of us become so good at stuffing our emotions, minimizing our pain, and pretending we're okay. Eventually we stop recognizing what's actually true. We call it being strong, having faith, or moving on. But that is not living authentically. If we can learn to see God as He revealed Himself through Jesus—full of grace, truth, and compassion—we don't have to hide anymore. God already knows what's in our hearts. Healing begins when we stop hiding it from ourselves.
