There was a time, all I knew was the anxiety.

Decades.

Plagued with doubt, wrapped up in perfectionism, living out the same cycles that had been put on me time and time again.

Be smaller.
Stay submissive.
Don’t be loud.
Do what they tell you to do to stay safe.
Someone else always knows best.

And my voice? My self-expression and the fullness of my authentic self? Sacrificed on the alter of society over and over again.

The patterns started as a trauma response- a way to keep myself safe. But then they turned into self-criticism, censoring my identity, my thoughts, how I show up in the world.

Self-critiquing became self loathing. Self-harming choices. Fear of what they’ll think.

I wasn’t sure, those years ago, if it could get better. If it could change. If I could break out.

But thank God for the tools I’ve learned along the way. How I’ve learned to show up for myself. Embrace myself.
