Claudette Colvin passed away today at the age of 86. Claudette Colvin was a brave young woman who at 15 years old, Skylers age now, was done with segregation and launched her own bus boycott when she refused to give up her seat to a white woman. This led to her arrest. Claudette was one of four plaintiffs in the first federal court case challenging bus segregation in Montgomery, AL. A panel of 3 judges ruled bus segregation unconstitutional, a pivotal decision in the fight for civil rights. Claudette continued to fight injustices when she later married a white man while in*******al marriage was still illegal. May we continue to have brave young people who fight for what's right during this time of injustice across our nation. May Ms. Claudette Colvin rest in power.
Today's young phenomenal Black woman is Claudette Colvin! Month's before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat, 15 year old Claudette did the exact same thing. In an interview with the New York Times in 2009, she explained how her mother encouraged her to keep her story quiet and allow Rosa to be the one to be the public face of this movement. It had been decided by people higher than Claudette that Rosa Parks would have this distinction, in part, because she was lighter skinned than Claudette. I can only imagine her mother was trying to protect her from many evils. Today we honor, Claudette Colvin, and her melanin as part of !

This isn't new, but it's always nice to have a reminder that bigger isn't always better.

Sharing this article on s*xual and reproductive health services at UC health centers in honor of S*xual Health Month. Spoiler alert: I'm quoted in it!

Content Warning. This post may be triggering for some folx.
I had a Healthy S*xuality Coaching client today who came in to discuss sterilization. This is a 22 year old, woman identified young person. Twenty-two. Why, you ask? She is afraid that she may be forced by a partner or parent to have a child one day. Since abortion is no longer a viable option for her due to Roe v Wade being overturned (she is not from California, though she is currently living here). As such, she has researched sterilization and is planning to have a bilateral salpingectomy (medical talk for removing her fallopian tubes).
Of course, I did my best to educate her on her options while she is in California, including how to obtain her desired procedure. I'm sharing this story with you all because it was sad listening to her speak about her fears related to others control of her body. So, as the election nears please keep in mind the extremes that some young people will go to in order to maintain some resemblance of control over their bodies.

We lost a legendary woman, the original S*x Goddess, Dr. Ruth. May she rest in s*x paradise.
Dr. Ruth was the first woman I ever knew to speak publicly about s*x and in such a s*x positive way. I'm honored to be speaking about her impact later today.

I was approached by this young woman while waiting in line at Target today. She asked if I worked at Planned Parenthood (I did from 2005-2007). She then shared that I was her S*x Educator at Making Waves and she now teaches her daughters (10 and 4) the things I taught her when she was a young teen. I love moments like this. π₯°π«ΆπΏπ₯°π«ΆπΏπ₯°

Today is World AIDS Day! There have been great advancements in regards to HIV treatments and prevention. However, it's important to remember the lives lost and those who will be lost despite these medical advances. This year's theme for World AIDS Day is appropriately "remember and commit."
My students at UC Berkeley are doing a special HIV testing event today as part of our ongoing commitment to help people get tested and connected to care. Knowing your status is only half the battle. Know you status. Communicate with (potential) partners. Prevent transmission. Educate yourself and others about HIV.
