Determination is an essential quality that helps a person overcome challenges to achieve their goals, and to develop mental toughness.
It is a positive emotional feeling that involves persevering towards a difficult goal in spite of obstacles. It is a firmness of purpose and a fixed intention to achieve a desired end.
It includes a combination of mental strength, perseverance, and focus, and enables people to succeed in life.
In order to have determination, you must have desire, motivation, ambition, positive thinking, and alignment with personal values.
If you are lacking determination in a specific area, and don’t know why, start by asking yourself, "is this a goal I am inspired by and does it align with my values?" I find that when I am lacking determination, it is because the answer to these two questions is “no.”

Are you one of those people who listen to the stories your friends share about their fun and exciting experiences, and you feel envious that you don't have stories to share back?
Many people live vicariously through others but miss out on all that life has to offer for themselves. Often times it's because of some irrational fear of getting out of their comfort zone. Maybe it's because it's not a good time to do it and they tell themselves, "I will do that later when I have more money, or more time, or after my responsibilities at home lighten up, etc."
If this sounds like you, think about what it really is that is holding you back. Life is too short to let fear, anxiety, or possible discomfort be the reason you aren't living the life you deserve.
If your life is exactly the way you want it and you are truly happy, no pressure to do something you don't want to do! But if you feel like life is passing you by, I recommend that you talk to someone who can help you overcome whatever it is that is holding you back. It's never too late to start living your dreams.

How are those resolutions going for you? If you are like many people, you choose your resolutions based on what feels important at the time. They are usually big and vague and future focused.
Take a gym membership for example. This is a very common resolution. "I'm going to join a gym this year because I should really get in shape and lose some weight."
Some studies have found that only about 8% of resolutions stick. Why? Because most resolutions lack clear goals and/or the structure of a plan. Most importantly, a resolution does not help answer the reason why.
The gym membership example is based on a future outcome, which is vague. And "should" isn't a reason why it's important. Even if you said "...because I WANT to get in shape and lose some weight" you need to know WHY you want to do that. What about that is motivating or important to you. Try this and I bet you will be in that 8% of people who are successful. Good luck!
If you've made resolutions this year, take a look at them and make sure you have a compelling reason why it's important to you. And consider turning them into actual goals - make them SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely).

Today we honor a man who was courageous and willing to fight for what he believed in. May we all follow his example and be willing to take risks to achieve what we truly believe in. If anyone tells you your dreams are impossible or not worthwhile, prove them wrong!
Happy MLK, Jr. Day!
