The LEAD-K Campaign is a civil right movement to end the nationwide epidemic of language deprivation by promoting language equality, American Sign Language (ASL) and English, as a basic human right for all Deaf babies, LEADING to a new generat

ion of Deaf children who are Kindergarten-ready. The National LEAD-k campaign is a direct response to the growing epidemic of language deprived Deaf children denied ASL which has an irreparable catastrophic impact on their education and developmental years. Most of the Deaf children denied ASL are not Kindergarten-ready by the time they are at the age of 5, because they do not have the foundation of a natural visual language. Language Equality and Language Rights will reach out and educate others about what is happening to our Deaf babies and create social change to embrace ASL as a human right, not as an option. LEAD-K invites you to join this civil rights movement of, for and by Deaf people.

An estimated 250-300 babies across the state of TN are identified as dDeaf and hard of hearing every year. Currently there is no standard assessment or statistics on language acquisition and development, either English or ASL to monitor and guide support within the most at risk area (language).

Let's talk about the benefits of establishing a language assessment program within our state. Regardless of language used, having a regular language assessment in place in 1 or both languages used will help drive data-driven interventions helping families make decisions. We want dDeaf* children to be ready to read in kindergarten and track progress through 3rd grade, which is the start of TCAP assessments.

*dDeaf represents deaf, hard of hearing, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, unilateral hearing status, single sided deafness, Auditory Neuropathy, Late Identified, Late Deafened, and At Risk/In Process of Discovery
