✅ At MindPowerMath We teach easy methods not taught in schools. Some see these as “shortcuts” when actually they are just different methods to calculating the answer. In schools across America we are only taught one way to do the basics, such as subtraction from right to left and cross out and borrow. The problem with only knowing one method is that when a student makes a mistake and re-works the problem, they are most likely to make that same mistake again. This is where having more than one method comes in handy. It gives you the opportunity to use a second method to cross-check your answers.
✅ We also teach checking devices, which are a way to check your answer without re-calculating it. They are techniques such as Casting out 9’s and Casting out 11’s. They are essentially a way to “check” your answers. These techniques are not taught in school and I cannot tell you how detrimental this is. How are students to know whether or not they got the answer right?
